Like other TSOs, 50Hertz uses a SCADA system to monitor and control the grid. SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition and is a kind of “black box” for us as a TSO as it offers many different functionalities in a large package from one vendor. However, this means that flexibility is very limited and adaptations and new developments can be costly and time-consuming.

Digital transformation

The process of digital transformation builds the bridge between “today” and “tomorrow”. This entails not only technological but also organisational, methodological and cultural change. Thinking in products requires us to identify different stakeholders’ needs and to apply an agile way of working. We develop products in short iterations by integrating regular customer feedback. We see failures as opportunities that we can learn from, and we train our people in new competencies required to implement our vision.

MCCS vision and high-level architecture

50Hertz sees MCCS as a vision of things to come, an architecture and sustainable reference solution for system operations of the future. The MCCS product line provides core functionalities that the control centres need and makes them reusable for other use cases. The secure and modular architecture can flexibly adapt to changing requirements by replacing, modifying, expanding or adding products or modules efficiently and economically. The UI/UX design provides a unified interface with seamless integration of all software pieces for the operator. The new level of security-by-design improves resilience, reduces the impact of failures and allows faster iterative upgrade of modules. MCCS is event- and data-driven, integrates any kind of real-time or near real-time data and makes the data accessible and transparent for existing as well as new use cases. With this approach, 50Hertz aims to increase the scalability and availability of both the system and the data and thereby safeguard critical infrastructure operations. MCCS is based on a platform architecture to enable maximum reuse of functionalities and capabilities across different value chain segments and products.
