Differences between US and Japanese cultures

  • US business culture is built around facts and opinions disputes and conflict can happen, and this is more taboo in Japan.
  • The workplace is more formal in Japan and even co-workers would be surprised to be called by their first name.
  • The speed of decisions also varies, the US commonly is faster and Japan takes more time and takes into account all the people involved.

Business protocols

  • All cultural norms are expected as well as being prepared when going to a meeting, this includes buisness cards and documents.
  • Expected to wear business professional clothes that are simple and dark, expected to take off coats before entering an office.
  • Wait for your seat; guests are expected to sit the furthest away from the door.
  • Show attentiveness and care a lot about the relationship between the parties

Food and eating

  • Foods consist of a lot of noodle dishes and sushi this includes Tempora, Yakitori, Ramen, onigiri, and more.
  • Expected to eat with chopsticks and learn to not stab at the food but pick it up, even noodles.
  • Before meals use the oshibori hot towel to wash your hands, when eating formally you should not wipe your face with it.
  • Do not use chopsticks to pass food, use the opposite end to transfer food from shared dishes

Cultural Customs and Body Language

  • Based on respect and being mindful of others around you.
  • Expected to bow to show respect when meeting someone, the deeper the bow is expected based on the formality of interaction.
  • Punctuality is very important and expected when meeting someone.
  • Touching is Taboo and the distance between bows should be respected.
  • Avoid eye contact, especially when speaking to elders or people in higher positions.
