Present simple

It is formed in the same way as the main verb but not including the word "to" On the 3rd person (he/she) the letter "s" is included. If we use the negative, the word "do not" or "does not" is necessary. In interrogative sentences, auxiliary verb do is placed before the word.

Present simple

When do we use the present simple?

  • We use the present simple in the following situations:
  • General facts and descriptions: Many students don´t like school.
  • Daily routines: I go to school everyday.
  • Likes and opinions: I like rock music
  • Schedules: Natural Sciences class starts at 11 o´clock.

  • Some examples of adverbs of frequency that we use in the present siple tense are:
  • Always, sometimes, usually, often, never.

Present continuous

It is formed with the verb "to be" plus the main verb ending in -ing: I am going to school next week. It expresses what is happening at the moment, right now. In negative, not is added to the verb to be instead of the main verb: I am not going to school next week In interrogative, we add the verb to be at the beginning of the sentence: Are you going to school everyday?

  • Present simple expresses daily routines and actions that we usually do.
  • Present continuous expresses what is happening right now:
