I took the five video files and got to work! I edited the videos in Camtasia, adding callouts, zooms, emphasis, etc. to increase clarity and engagement for the learner. I added some pauses because the SME was a rather fast talker and then synced up the video and audio tracks. I also blurred out personal information on the screen (names, email addresses, and external IP addresses).
STORYLINE
Storyline: I opened up Storyline and built the general frame for the course. I got to work on creating a menu screen using a company-branded PowerPoint slide as the background and then made simple buttons in Canva. I made hover state, visited state, and normal state versions of each of the five buttons. I then put the five videos on individual slides accessible via the menu buttons. I added the closed captioning files to the Storyline file so the learner would be able to control them in the player.
RISE
With the Storyline file complete, I inserted it as a Storyline block in a Rise course. I built the Rise course to match the format of the other courses in the NDR enablement library, adding the learning objectives, introduction, knowledge check, etc.
CONTEXT
This topic (UI Deep Dive) was one on a list of many that my team was working on developing courses for in order to build up our training library for our NDR product.
INTERACTIVE VIDEO
Interactive Video: Now that the five videos were complete, I was faced with the question of how best to present them to the learner. The five topics are widely varied it is not necessary to watch them in any particular order or even to watch all five of them (if, for example, the learner was already familiar with the dashboard and only needed to know how to navigate the Incident Page and Details screen). I had recently explored an eLearning Heroes Challenge from Articulate on interactive videos which sparked the idea to create an interactive video in Storyline for this project.
PLANNING
Planning: I took on this particular course and began communicating with the product SME. Together, we determined the general list of topics and features that would need to be covered for the course. Luckily, this SME gives product demos to customers frequently, so he had a fairly clear idea of what should be included. Because the goal of the course was for the user to learn to navigate the platform, I determined that demo videos were the best option. I helped to solidify the outline for the videos with the SME's input and final approval. The SME preferred to speak "off the cuff" based on the outline, so we did not write a detailed script in advance.
FEEDBACK & PUBLISHING
I got final approval from my SME to ensure that entire course was accurate and met our initial goals. After being reviewed by my project manager, I published the course and coordinated with our ___________ to get it hosted in the company LMS and available for customers.
RECORDING
The SME and I met to record the videos. Since the SME was the one doing the demo, he used SnagIt to record his screen and audio. I was on the call to help with the technical recording aspects, provide feedback and suggestions, and be a second pair of eyes and ears.
