The lucky coin

01

Maggie didn't believe in magic. She thought it was all just make-believe and fairy tales. Whenever she had a dream, she worked hard to make it come true through her own efforts. When she wanted to excel in her studies, she spent extra hours studying every day for a month.

Make-believe (noun): Pretending that something is real when it's not. Fairy tales (noun): Stories with magical creatures and events.

Grandpa's Gift

One day, Maggie's grandpa returned from a trip to Ireland and brought back a mysterious-looking coin. He said with a grin, "I have no doubt that your future will be bright, but if you ever find yourself in need of luck, this coin will do the trick. Just hold it tightly and make a wish." Maggie thought it was a joke.

Mysterious (adjective): Something that is difficult to understand or explain. Trick (noun): A clever way to do something.

Maggie's First Wish

Maggie chuckled and said, "Grandpa, you know I don't believe in stuff like that." Grandpa winked and insisted, "The coin is very powerful, so promise me you will use it responsibly." Maggie pocketed the coin, rolled her eyes, and thought, "A lucky coin? How absurd!" The next day, Maggie's world turned upside down when her teacher surprised the class with a quiz, and she hadn't done the reading assignment.

Chuckled (verb): Laughed in a light-hearted way. Absurd (adjective): Extremely silly or ridiculous.

Maggie's Quiz Miracle

Panic set in as Maggie realized she had never missed an assignment before. She reached into her pocket and held the coin. She thought, "This is silly, but what do I have to lose?" She made a wish for a miracle. Maggie looked at the quiz, and to her surprise, the questions were not about last night's reading but a story she had read last week. It felt like a miracle! The coin seemed to work!

During lunchtime, Maggie's stomach rumbled. She wished for something simple - pizza. She held the coin and made her wish. When she reached the cafeteria, she was overjoyed to see pizza on the menu. As she savored her second slice of pepperoni pizza, she thought, "I could get used to this."

Championship Game

On the morning of the championship game, Maggie's confidence seemed to vanish. She couldn't make a single basket during the first half of the game, and her teammates struggled without her usual guidance. It appeared that the team was on the verge of losing. The referee called a timeout, and Maggie slumped on the bench, ignoring her coach's pep talk.

Vanish (verb): Disappear suddenly. Guidance (noun): Help and advice. Pep talk (noun): An inspiring speech to boost morale.

Maggie's Revelation

"I didn't used to believe in magic, and now I can't do anything without it," Maggie lamented. She wished she had never heard of that lucky coin.

Lamented (verb): Expressed sorrow or regret.

Maggie's Coach's Request

"Hey, Maggie! Are you listening?" Maggie snapped to attention as her coach waved his hand in front of her face. "We need some of your usual magic, or we don't stand a chance. Can we count on you?" With a second whistle, the team returned to the basketball court. Within moments, the ball was in Maggie's hands. She took a deep breath, skillfully dribbled toward the basket, and took a shot.
