Translation: Who, What & How

01

A brief review of the central tasks and processes.

Translation

What does translation consist of?

Translation converts any media in one language into another (often multiple others), while preserving the content, tone, and purpose. Examples include:- Business contracts- Technical documents (manuals, spec's, etc.)- Training materials

Translation

How does translation occur?

Translation requires multiple types of expertise. First, the translator must have linguistic expertise in both source and target languages. Next, content expertise is required to guarantee that the information communicated remains the same throughout translation. To accomplish this, translators work with the appropriate experts (determined by the project's content) to ensure the correctness of work in every capacity.

Translation

A translation project requires collaboration and technology. The process begins with a finished document in a particular language. This document is handed over for translation. Any questions about the desired purpose, content, and other desired traits of the translation are discussed. This document and attached goals are passed along to to a team of experts (with both linguistic & content expertise) who begin translating. After several rounds of revisions, a draft is returned to the client for initial comments.

This process takes place in translation software (e.g. Trados, SmartCat) which allows translators access to collaboration, commenting, language info, and technical criteria. After the translation is complete, reviewed, and approved, we deliver it to the client in the desired digital form.

Performing all of this work with speed and accuracy requires extensive expertise and coordination.

Translation

Who is involved in translation?

Knowing a bit about the different jobs within our industry will go a long way in your sales career.

Individual experts lie at the heart of this work. Some are experts in languages, others in precise, field-specific communication. Still others are cultural experts, able to speak fluently in powerful images and cultural values.

Localization

Localization

02

While translation needs are more obvious to a client, they may not be aware of the benefits of localization. This is why we always include "& localization" in our service tagline.

Helping firms adapt to each and every culture they communicate with.

Localization goes beyond just making company materials comprehensible; it adapts language/text with a specific audience and culture in mind to achieve clear, natural, and effective communication.

Localization

Localization makes a product feel as-if it was created and marketed by those within a culture. This process begins with creating natural written material in the native language through quality translation, but also includes knowledge about societal values, historic traditions/symbolism, and cultural faux-pax's. All kinds of detailed analysis go into proper localization, and each culture has a unique set of factors that shape the localization process.

E-Learning

Subtitling & Dubbing

A Spain-based company has e-learning courses which struggle to drive engagement in Latin America. Recording with a Colombian speaker drastically improves results.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was not allowed to record the German dubbing for "The Terminator" because his native German has a thick, rural accent.

One company struggled to reach international markets through their website, so we created a foreign language version complete with translations, new images and videos.
