SUPERLATIVE
Superlatives are used to compare one thing or one person with a group
Comparatives are used clearly to compare two things or people, within the same sentence.
Comparative Adjective
The most important thing to form adjectives comparatives is to see if the adjective is long or short.
Short EXAMPLEOLD adj+er than older than
LongEXAMPLE:Difficult more+adj+than more difficult than
the adjective in comparative form can be:
of superiority
to form short comparative adjectives of superiority
we have to add the suffix -ER and accompany them with THAN in the sentence. If the adjective already ends in E we just have to add the letter -R at the end
Long → Longer Cold → Colder Large → Larger Nice → Nicer
When the adjective is short and ends in a consonant preceded by a vowel, the consonant is doubleif the consonant is already double, it is not changed
examples:Hot → Hotter
Big → Bigger
EXAMPLETall → Taller
She is taller than me
For adjectives ending in Y, the end of the word becomes IER by removing the Y.EXAMPLESHappy → HappierTiny → Tinier
For long adjectives, we put MORE before it, not forgetting to add THAN after it.EXAMPLES:Beautiful → More beautiful thanExpensive → More expensive thanUncomfortable → More uncomfortable than
Inferiority
To construct this kind of comparison we use the conjunctions NOT AS __ AS or LESS THAN In both cases, the adjective remains in its simple form
EXAMPLEBernardo is not as funny as Pedro
My car is less clean than my brother's car.
Equality
To form sentences comparing objects in a degree of equality, we must use the formula AS ...... AS keeping the adjective also in its simple form.
EXAMPLESGareth Bale is as fast as Usain BoltSelena Gomez is as pretty as her mother
Superlative adjectives
To construct short superlative adjectives, we must add the suffix EST If the adjective ends in E you would only have to add the ending -ST.
EXAMPLES High → Highest
NOTE: we must always put the article THE in front of the adjective.
EXAMPLEPopocatépetl is the highest volcano in Puebla
when the adjective is short and ends in a consonant preceded by a vowel, just as in the comparative the consonant is doubled
Tall → Tallest Big → Bigges
In short adjectives ending in Y, the end of the word becomes “iest”
Funny → Funniest Tiny → Tiniest
For long adjectives we add THE MOST in front of the adjective in simple form
Important → The most important Beautiful → The most beautiful Expensive → The most expensive
