Caral City
The city had stone buildings that were used for: Official business, apartment building and grand residences. The habitants of Caral also developed a sophisticated system of irrigation.
They grew: squash, beans, and tomatoes.
San Lorenzo
The large cities of the Olmec were centers for economic activities and religious rituals.Skilled Olmec artisans also carved a series of colossal stone heads. These heads likely represented their gods or rulers.
The Olmec people
farmed along riverbanks in the hot, swampy lowlands along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico south of
Veracruz. They traded jade and a volcanic glass called obsidian
to make their tools, jewelry, and monuments.
Monte Albán
Monte Alban contains a number of temples and pyramids.
The Zapotec devised a written language that has not
been deciphered, or read.
An elite class of nobles and priests ruled the Zapotec peoples. The general population was made up
chiefly of farmers and artisans.
Teotihuacán
The first major city in Mesoamerica was Teotihuacán, or “Place of the
Gods.” This city was the capital of a kingdom. It had 200,000 habitants.Most of the people of Teotihuacán were farmers, their valley one of the richest farming areas in Mesoamerica. Teotihuacán was also a busy center for trade. Skilled artisans made tools, weapons, pottery, and jewelry in scores of workshops throughout the city. Their obsidian tools are especially famous, the goods made in Teotihuacán were shipped to Central America, Mexico, and southwestern North America.
Chavin
The Chavin people in the coastal regions of modern-day Peru and Ecuador built a large ceremonial
complex, and it was surrounded by two pyramids and stone figures depicting different gods. The
Chavin made objects of gold and silver.They built a solar observatory made of 13 stone towers. There are even signs that they had a simple writing system. For unknown reasons, the Chavin culture declined.
