San Lorenzo

The large cities of the Olmec were centers for economic activities and religious rituals.Skilled Olmec artisans also carved a series of colossal stone heads. These heads likely represented their gods or rulers.

The Olmec people farmed along riverbanks in the hot, swampy lowlands along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico south of Veracruz. They traded jade and a volcanic glass called obsidian to make their tools, jewelry, and monuments.

Monte Albán

Monte Alban contains a number of temples and pyramids.

The Zapotec devised a written language that has not been deciphered, or read.

An elite class of nobles and priests ruled the Zapotec peoples. The general population was made up chiefly of farmers and artisans.

Teotihuacán

The first major city in Mesoamerica was Teotihuacán, or “Place of the Gods.” This city was the capital of a kingdom. It had 200,000 habitants. Most of the people of Teotihuacán were farmers, their valley one of the richest farming areas in Mesoamerica. Teotihuacán was also a busy center for trade. Skilled artisans made tools, weapons, pottery, and jewelry in scores of workshops throughout the city. Their obsidian tools are especially famous, the goods made in Teotihuacán were shipped to Central America, Mexico, and southwestern North America.

Chavin

The Chavin people in the coastal regions of modern-day Peru and Ecuador built a large ceremonial complex, and it was surrounded by two pyramids and stone figures depicting different gods. The Chavin made objects of gold and silver. They built a solar observatory made of 13 stone towers. There are even signs that they had a simple writing system. For unknown reasons, the Chavin culture declined.
