The Mountain Giants

On one of the highest heights of the Alsace mountains, on the edge of a precipice, many years ago there was a fantastic castle that had been built on the living rock, from whose high towers the whole valley was dominated. A man lived in it with his family, which was made up of his wife and his daughter – a beautiful girl, but mischievous and determined – who happily traveled the mountains and cliffs with the agility of a gazelle. Her father let her roam free in the mountains; but he had refused her, under severe penalties, to go down to the plain.

The Mountain Giants

The girl looked at the valley with infinite curiosity, and she felt an irresistible attraction for it, especially since she was forbidden to go there. One day when her parents had to go away to solve some business, the daughter thought that she could take the opportunity to go down to the valley and see what it was like up close; she was accustomed to walk on the peaks, in a short time she would go, and she could be back before her parents returned. And in less time than she thought, she was already in the plain, where some farmers worked the land, while others, in the threshing floors, threshed and collected the grain.

The Mountain Giants

The girl was excited. She had never seen such precious toys! And she spread her apron, which covered several fields, and threw into it with crazy with happiness; men, oxcarts, horses and houses; and loaded with everything, she went to her castle, and calling to her father who had already returned, she took off her apron and spread it out on the floor with everything she brought. Look what wonders I have found! – And he showed her the men, the cattle and the houses. The lord of the castle, who was a giant, became very serious, scolded his daughter for having disobeyed him, and ordered her to take everything back to where she had found it.

The Mountain Giants

His daughter begged to be allowed to keep at least some of those dolls that moved. The men, who trembled with fear when they saw themselves in the giant's castle, now breathed somewhat calmly when they heard that they were to be returned to the valley, and they slipped away, not wanting to stay as the girl's toys. She had to go back to pick up everything she had thrown, before her father's disaproval, who told her: – Take them to where you picked them up, we owe our lives to them. All of us mountain giant brothers would starve if the plain dwarves did not work the land.

Los Gigantes de la Montaña

Legenda Popular Francesa

¡Mira que maravillas he encontrado!
