When King Uther began to reign in Great Britain, the famous brotherhood of the Knights of the Round Table was established in Carlysle, at the initiative of the wizard Merlin, who was the court adviser. Those who had the honor of belonging to such a high institution, all nobles, should follow certain rules: Help each other in any danger; die rather than be defeated by the enemy; undertake adventures for good causes, covering themselves, thereby, with more honor and glory.

King Uther, when the Round Table was founded, made great celebrations, and in them he met the beautiful Ingerme, wife of the Duke Garlois, who died a short time later, and the monarch, with the help of Merlin's magical gifts, married Ingerme. They had two children: Morgana and Arthur. When Princess Morgana and Prince Arthur were already teenagers, the death of King Uther came. Morgana, being a little older, wanted to be the queen, but Arthur, because he was a man, was declared king when he was fifteen years old.

The nobles in general, and in particular the Knights of the Round Table, argued that the young Arthur could not be king because he was so small and, therefore, without the required experience and necessary courage for the just wars against the constant enemies of other nations. In Great Britain, at that time, it was king who corresponded by inheritance, but also in cases like this, in which the stability of the kingdom was in danger, a nobleman could aspire to such a regal position, if he also had the attributes that made him worthy. And in order to have a council on such an important decision, six Knights left the royal castle of Logres in search of the Wizard Merlin, who told them that he would think of the way to choose the new king.

The next morning, in the middle of the square in front of the church, a great rock appeared in which a superb and shining sword was embedded; On the rock was the inscription: I am Excalibur, the tall one; I am the best treasure of a king And Merlin said: – Whoever is able to tear this sword from the rock, he must be chosen king. Los nobles en general y en particular los Caballeros de la Mesa Redonda, argumentaron que el joven Arturo no podía ser rey por ser tan pequeño y, por consiguiente, sin la experiencia requerida y valor necesario para las justas guerreras en contra de los constantes enemigos de otras naciones. En Gran Bretaña, en aquel entonces, era rey quien por herencia le correspondía, pero también en casos como éste, en que estaba en peligro la estabilidad del reino, podía un noble aspirar a tan regio cargo, si además tenía los atributos que lo hicieran merecedor. Y a efecto de tener un consejo sobre tan importante decisión, del castillo real de Logres salieron seis Caballeros en busca del Mago Merlín, quien les dijo que pensaría la forma de que se eligiera el nuevo rey. A la mañana siguiente, en medio de la plaza frente a la iglesia, apareció una gran roca en la cual se hallaba incrustada una soberbia y refulgente espada; en la roca rezaba la inscripción: Soy Excalibur, la alta; soy el mejor tesoro de un rey

Cuando comenzó a reinar en Gran Bretaña el rey Uther, se constituyó, en Carlysle, la famosa cofradía de los Caballeros de la Mesa Redonda, a iniciativa del mago Merín, quien era el consejero de la corte. Quienes tenían el honor de pertenecer a tan alta institución, todos nobles, deberían seguir ciertas reglas: Ayudarse los unos a los otros en cualquier peligro; morir antes que dejarse vencer por el enemigo; emprender aventuras por buenas causas, cubriéndose, con ello, de más honor y gloria. El rey Uther, al fundarse La Mesa Redonda hizo grandes festejos, y en ellos conoció a la bellísima Ingerme, esposa del Duque Garlois, quien muy poco tiempo después murió, y el monarca, con ayuda de las dotes mágicas de Merlín se casó con Ingerme. Tuvieron dos hijos: Morgana y Arturo. Ya adolescentes la princesa Morgana y el príncipe Arturo, vino la muerte del rey Uther. Morgana siendo un poco mayor de edad quiso ser la reina, más Arturo, por ser hombre, fue declarado rey cuando tenía quince años de edad.

Y Merlín dijo: – Aquél que sea capaz de arrancar esta espada de la roca, deberá ser elegido rey. El pueblo todo se congregó en la plaza; presidía el acontecimiento el arzobispo Bruce. Y fueron pasando uno a uno los nobles de la corte, los ciento cincuenta Caballeros de la Mesa Redonda, y aun algunos no tan nobles pero que se sentían con méritos suficientes, o al menos con la fuerza necesaria para desprender la real espada de su cautiverio pétreo. Ninguno lo logró; ni siquiera un centímetro lograron moverla. Desanimados todos los congregados y ya dispuestos a retirarse, el joven Arturo se acercó a la gran piedra, tomó con sus dos manos la empuñadura de la espada Excalibur, y sin gran esfuerzo la sacó y blandió en lo alto, como muestra de su triunfo. El pueblo vitoreó la hazaña y los nobles quedaron convencidos de quién era su soberano; el príncipe Arturo, quien, entre exclamaciones, fue declarado monarca de Gran Bretaña.

A partir de entonces el joven Rey Arturo se ganó el amor de su pueblo, por su bondad, por su valor, y por defender, a capa y espada, las causas nobles. Cuando iniciaba una empresa, siempre la llevaba a buen fin, por peligrosa y difícil que ésta fuera.
