Present Tense -AR Verbs

An infinitive is a verb in its simplest, unaltered form. It conveys the idea of an action, but does not indicate who is doing the action or when the action happens (subject / tense)

See pg. 45 in Puntos de Partida for these common -AR verbs BAILAR - to dance ESTUDIAR - to study BUSCAR - to look for HABLAR - to talk CANTAR - to sing NECESITAR - to need COMPRAR - to buy TOMAR - to take, to drink ESCUCHAR - to listen TRABAJAR - to work

How do I conjugate a verb?

AR

Decide who is doing the action (subject)

Choose the correct ending to match the subject.

Take off the -AR ending

Now, you're left with the root BAIL

In this case, HE (él) is the subject of the action TO DANCE (bailar).

So if we follow the conjugation rules, our new conjugated verb will be BAILA = HE DANCES

Check out A short video that explains the conjugation concept again.

Verb endings in Spanish tell us WHO is doing the action as well as the TENSE. So for example, "YO BAILO MUCHO" is very different from "ELLA BAILA MUCHO" simply because the verb ending has changed to match the subject.

Pay close attention to the verb endings. You will need to memorize these endings in order to communicate well in Spanish!
