CCA Academic Honesty Policy

https://help.myedio.com/hc/en-us/articles/360014476852-Academic-Honesty

A high standard of academic integrity is expected of learners in all aspects of their academic work at CCA. Learners are expected to produce their best work and their own work. In the first instance of a violation of the CCA Honor Code, the learner will receive a warning from their teacher. In subsequent instances, the learner may receive a zero for the assignment with no option to resubmit.

CCA Honor Code

Commonwealth Charter Academy is dedicated to learner achievement at the highest level and expects academic honesty to be a core value for all its learners, parents, and staff. By making the choice to enroll in CCA, our learners and their parents/guardians have taken charge of their education and demonstrated a genuine desire to fulfill their academic potential. Cheating, plagiarizing and other acts of academic dishonesty are directly counter to the principles of academic excellence. Academic dishonesty harms those learners who engage in such activities because they cheat themselves of the opportunity to fully learn from academic events and develop their own abilities and skills. As a CCA learner, I know that academic honesty is critical to my own success, as well as to the mission of my school. I understand that my word is an expression of myself and my character. I respect the property of others. I set goals to achieve my best. I participate in school on a regular basis and complete assignments to the best of my ability. Together, CCA and I are working to prepare me for my future. I uphold not only the specifics in the CCA Code of Honor but the implied intent of the commitment toward excellence and honesty.

Dictionaries

To use the dictionary appropriately and to your greatest benefit, you need to know
  • correct spelling of the word in Japanese or English
  • parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) and dictionary abbreviations of these terms
  • how to read a verb conjugation table and subject pronouns
  • grammar terms (such as names of verb tenses and moods like imperfect, imperative, subjunctive, etc.)
  • adjective agreement and the usage of the words.

Popular online Japanese-English dictionaries

  • Tangorin :
  • Jisho :
  • Reverso :

Out of these three categories (dictionaries, translators, and AI), AI tools require the most skill to use appropriately.

  • AI programs like ChatGPT can be an interesting and often entertaining way to explore language. But it is not appropriate or ethical to use them to construct responses for lessons and assessments. You should focus on completing your lessons using the content of your course. You need to create original work that has not been copied.
  • You should always use the course resources provided in your edio lesson and by your teacher. If you need assistance understanding the content of your course or creating responses to open-ended questions, contact your teacher for support.
  • There are many kinds of artificial intelligence that can be used in language learning. These include programs like Duolingo. Other examples are ChatGPT, Quillbot, Grammarly, and ReadSpeaker.
  • To appropriately use these programs you must understand the responses the AI program produces and know the language well enough to catch the errors when the program makes mistakes, does not understand the context, or presents inaccurate information. To achieve this ability, you need to learn the language through study and practice. Your edio lessons are designed to help you do that.
If you copy a sentence or statement produced by an online program and include it as your own response in a lesson or assessment without noting that you used the program, that is a violation of the academic honesty policy.

AI Technology

To use an AI program appropriately and to your greatest benefit, you need to know

  • grammar structures covered in your course (for example, verb conjugations in the present tense; the appropriate use of the present progressive; the difference between the uses of the preterite and imperfect, etc.)
  • the verb words used in your language course.
  • simplified the explanation in your language course
  • how to read and write in English and Japanese
  • correct spelling of words in Japanese and English
  • the vocabulary words used in your language course

Do not use AI programs like ChatGPT or Quillbot to complete writing tasks or to create sentences for responses in your language course. Do not use spoken voices produced with AI technology (including translators and dictionaries that pronounce words/phrases) to submit responses in your language course. These tools can be helpful to review pronunciation, but the recordings/results should not be presented as your own voice. Review the Readspeaker tutorial to understand how this tool can be used in our language course.

Translators

Do not use translators to complete tasks in your language course.

To use a translator appropriately and to your greatest benefit, you need to know

  • correct spelling of the word in Japanese or English
  • the vocabulary words for your language course
  • grammar structures you have learned in your course (for example, verb conjugations in the present tense; the appropriate use of the present progressive; the difference between the uses of the preterite and imperfect, etc.)
If you copy a sentence or statement produced by a translator and include it as your own response in a lesson or assessment without noting that you used a translator, that is a violation of the academic honesty policy.

  • Translators that are part of dictionaries will give you more information and often break down and explain the words used in the translation.
  • Translators will not know the grammar and vocabulary that has been covered in your course and that you are expected to know and use.
  • There is a good chance a translator will provide a word or statement that is not covered in your course. If you cannot explain the use of a word or the grammar structure of a sentence, then you should not use it.

APPROPRIATE USE OF LANGUAGE TOOLS

Content in your edio guided instruction lessons and course materials (guided notes, study guides) are the most important resources for your course. You should reference and review this content when you complete coursework.

  • Review how to use the tools below to support (and not hinder) your learning.
  • Remember, these tools are not human teachers - they will not be able to give you personalized support or know the vocabulary and grammar concepts that have been covered in your course.
  • It is essential that they only be used if you can do so in an ethical manner where you are producing your own work and learning (not copying).
