Drones and Australia
Let's look at how drones are helpful in Australia!
go!
YOUR MISSION FOR THIS UNIT
You are a team of designers who are in charge of building drones for an English-speaking country. After researching what drones are made in Australia to solve problems in that country, you need to design a helpful drone and convince a tech giant to build it. Present orally your drone, consider its benefits but also the possible difficulties and risks in relation to local regulations. Your device must be eco-friendly. Prepare a slideshow presentation to help convince the viewers.
How to complete your mission
Choose a subject
3 classes
3 classes
• Step 1 : Choose a subject of research among the suggested subjects • Step 2 : Ask one of your teachers to give you a research document according to the subject you chose. • Step 3 : Read and complete the activities with your research document. • Step 4 : You will then have to present orally your research to the class. It will be graded ( /7).
• FINAL STEP : Then, you will have time to present your OWN project of drone in an English-speaking country. It will be graded ( /20).

In Victoria, Australia, firefighters have welcomed a new aviation drone unit that will support firefighting efforts on the ground. The newly announced unit will use DJI drones to improve situational awareness and ‘search and rescue’ efforts. […] The drone unit, composed of 25 drones, will also be available to other agencies in the state if required for any reason. The drones are equipped with RGB and thermal cameras, allowing them to be used day or night and, more importantly, find a hotspot in a fire to understand better what should be done next. One other specific model of drone is the FU6 Fire Fighting Drone. Its main frame is all made of a new carbon fibre material. This provides a safe and fireproof power system. The digital pan/scan combines GPS with accurate fire locating. Real-time monitoring can perform night flight missions. Wireless digital transmission allows you to avoid field wiring and powerlines. Fire extinguishing drones not only can be quickly deployed, but also can be used for fire detection and rapid fire extinguishing. In urban high-rise buildings and forest areas on a large scale, so they are widely used in various fields. Josh Spires, ronedj.com, 29 January, 2021.

RESEARCH REVIEW
You are now ready to present your research to the other teams. Summarize what you found and explain how it works in Australia. Then, develop how you could modify that drone to be even better (material, other uses, design, marketing…). Each one of the team members must speak at least 30 seconds. Don’t forget to make notes for your presentation! And be careful how you pronounce the words that you just practiced pronouncing! Don’t hesitate to ask your teachers for help! If you have time, you can even make a powerpoint presentation for presenting your research. N’oubliez pas de jeter un œil à la grille de notation en début de Genially pour prendre connaissance des points sur lesquels vous serez notés !

It's a killer robot with a good heart. After years of development and testing, researchers in Australia are preparing to launch an autonomous underwater drone designed to help safeguard the Great Barrier Reef – a mission that includes neutralising with a lethal injection a coral-eating species of starfish that threatens the reef's health. The yellow underwater bot is similar to a small fluorescent shark with motors instead of fins – with a length of 75 cm it weighs only 15 kg. It not only controls the number of population of starfishes, but also estimates a reef condition and also makes the map of underwater regions, working daily within eight hours. RangerBot has advantage over the human divers who are carrying out the same task – it is cheaper, more effective and is capable to work at any time. Professor Matthew Dunbabin heading research group noted that to manage RangerBot from the tablet it is possible to learn in only 15 minutes. Developers paid special attention to create the most clear and simple user interface and therefore a bot all interested persons – researchers, workers from the sphere of environment protection and even school students volunteers can manage. Researchers hope that thanks to the special software which can be configured on execution of different tasks RangerBot will find application and in other underwater ecosystems worldwide. Along with spotting swimmers in trouble and dropping lifesaving devices to them, drones are being used to spot predators such as sharks. A pair of Australian swimmers on Thursday became the first people to be rescued in the ocean by a drone when the aerial lifesaver dropped a safety device to distressed teens caught in rough seas. These drones, called Little Ripper Lifesavers and made of carbon fibre material, are equipped with various rescue tools, including the ability to send out sound alerts to swimmers in danger, transmit live data to control centers, detect sharks, and drop sea-marker dye to track objects or people in the water. There also exist additional features for these drones: an Epirb GPS locator fitted to Little Ripper rescue pods and a LED Laser Flare. Whether you’re a first responder, a search and rescue team, or an organisation looking for a reliable and effective way to support rescue efforts, the Little Ripper Lifesaver UAV can be tailored to meet your needs. Canberra, Australia, is the only place in the world where this is happening. Drone delivery has been a dream for years. But in Australia's capital, the future has become a reality. Those drones, made of carbon fibre material, have a package containing a hot coffee and on their GPS is an address of an under caffeinated customer. One of these customers testifies: “I'm surprised that it's possible. To be frank, it's bloody ridiculous that you can order a coffee and have it in three minutes.” Tech companies worldwide have been interested in the idea of drone delivery for years now. Amazon did its first drop in 2016 in rural England, Chinese online retailer JD.com has delivered packages in rural China, but with 25 drones in Canberra, the company Alphabet is pushing into new territory, delivering hot meals and hot coffee that need to be in customer's hands within minutes. Ordering is done in an app where users can select menus from a Mexican restaurant that's also partnering with wing for the test. The vendors receive the preparation, pack the order, then it's sent off to the address the user inputs. Bolden Johnson, wsj.com, 2019
