CAUSATIVES: HAVE AND GET

We use a causative verb when we want to talk about something that someone else did for us or for another person. It means that the subject caused the action to happen, but didn't do it themselves. Maybe they paid, or asked, or persuaded the other person to do it.

Basic concept

• You don't do the action

• Someone else does the action

• You are in control

Estructura have someone do something

La estructura have + persona + infinitivo significa que le hemos pedido a alguien, a cambio de dinero o como un favor, que haga algo en nuestro lugar.

Ejemplo: I washed the dishes. → I had John wash the dishes because I was tired.

Esta estructura se usa sobre todo con servicios pagados. Ejemplo: We had the plumber check the pipes.

Puede usarse con todos los tiempos verbales: Ejemplo: Jess isn’t happy with the colour, so she is having the decorator repaint. (present continuous) He has had the doctor do all different tests, but they still have no answers. (present perfect simple) I have the hairdresser style my hair whenever I have an appointment. (present simple)

Estructura have/get something done

En pasiva, la estructura causativa anterior se convierte en: have something done: have + complemento + participio pasado.

Normalmente, el agente se omite y se pone el foco en el servicio provisto. Ejemplo: We had the plumber check the pipes. (activa) We had our pipes checked. (pasiva)

Si queremos añadir el agente, usamos by. Ejemplo: We had our pipes checked by the plumber.

También podemos usar get en lugar de have, aunque gana un tono más informal. Ejemplo: We got our pipes checked.

Estructura get someone to do something

La última estructura causativa es get + persona + infinitivo con to.

Esta estructura se usa cuando se persuade, se convence, se engatusa o incluso se fuerza a alguien a hacer algo. Ejemplo: I got Patrick to attend the party even though he didn’t want to. Give the kids chocolate to get them to be quiet. The police got the suspect to talk. Esta estructura existe en todos los tiempos verbales, pero no puede usarse en pasiva.

GETTING AN ANIMAL SHELTER

Chris and Logan try to raise funds to open an animal shelter, since they love all kinds of animals and want to help those animals that are on the streets suffering from hunger and illness. They spoke with their families, their friends and posted their intentions on social media. After some time working on it, they had their grandfather donate land to build the shelter. They had friends donate in kind different things, They are getting some followers to help them with the construction of the shelter, even though they have had to pay some stuff by their own, they have the main structure builded, they are getting the garden decorated and got the pet's houses builded, everything is almost done, they will get the pet shelter very soon thank to all the people are still helping them and lots of animals will be enjoying the benefits of it.
