The Introduction
Once you decide what you want to write about, it's time to start putting things together. The introduction has three basic parts:
- The Hook
- General Statements
- The Thesis Statement
The Hook
The hook is the beginning of your essay. It's job is to "hook" the reader into wanting to read your whole essay. Hooks can be a variety of things such as:
- A quote
- A statistic
- An anecdote
General Statements
General statements should work like a funnel to move your reader from a very broad hook to a very specific thesis statement. Take a look at some nonfiction writing to see how writers accomplish this.
The Thesis Statement
The thesis statement is the MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE in the whole paper. It is ONE sentence that explains what you will prove in your essay. It goes at the end of your introduction paragraph. After reading this sentence, your reader should know exactly what to expect in your essay.

BodyParagraphs
Your body paragraphs are where you will PROVE YOUR THESIS. Regardless of how many body paragraphs you plan to write, you need to prove and support your thesis. This is one reason it is important that your thesis is the right "size" for your essay.
A Topic Sentence
Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence. The topic sentence tells your reader the point of that paragraph, almost like a mini-thesis. Be sure you put your body paragraphs in the same order you mention your points in your thesis.
Supporting Details
You should fill up your paragraph with supporting details to prove your topic sentence is correct.Supporting details are things such as:
- Examples
- Antecdotes
- Facts
- Reasons
- Statistics
Don't forget to cite your sources!
The Thesis Statement
The last sentence of the paragraph should wrap up what you had to say in that paragraph and/or transition into what is coming next in your essay (either a body paragraph or the conclusion).

TheConclusion
The job of your conclusion is to remind your reader of what you proved in your paper and what you want them to take away with them.
The First Sentences
Revist the thesis statement, but write it differently.
Supporting Details
Take a few setences to recap your main points without saying the exact same things.
The Take-away
The last sentence or two should leave your readers with whatever you want them to gain having read your essay.
