What is a gerund?

Is a verb that’s acting as a noun. By that, we mean that the verb—the word that describes the action that’s happening, like “biking,” “thinking,” “running,” or “speaking”—becomes a thing.

Examples:

• Swimming in the ocean has been Sharon’s passion since she was five years old.

• The ballerina taught us dancing.

• Apologizing to me isn’t enough this time.

• She is afraid of flying.

• They are capable of doing hard work.

• Biking is my newest hobby.
