All Students are General Education Students 1st!

When you're looking at what additional supports a student may need this summer, keep in mind that all students are general education students first. So, if you're looking at filling in gaps, tutorials, or grade/credit recovery.....look at the general education summer offerings.

Who can attend Exetended School Year?

ESY is for students in Special Education that have documentation of regression on IEP goals for 8 weeks or more following a break. ESY is used to maintain the progress made during the school year. ESY is not designed to teach new skills or for any credit recovery.

Data Collection

Data Collection

When you notice that a student has regressed on their goals, after an extended break, collect data for the next 8 weeks to help the ARD committee determine if ESY is needed. Many students regress after an extended break, but will bounce back after being back in their school routines.

ARD Determinations

At least annually, the ARD Committee must determine if there is a need for ESY services. If ESY is determined to be needed, the ARD committee will determine the number of days, the amount of time, the goals to be maintianed, and the services to be provided. All of this information is based on data. Each student will need an ESY supplement completed as part of the ARD meeting. If they are attending because the ARD Committee determined it should be part of their Autism services, ESY should also be included in their Autism supplement.

Service Reminder

vs

School Year

ESY

Keep the amount of time a student attends school during the school year in mind in comparison to the amount of time attending ESY when determining the service needs to maintain skills. During ESY the amount of time per day and the number of days is typically much less than the school year. The amount of time needed for Instructional and Related Services most likely would need to be adjusted for ESY.

Dates & Locations

Dates

There are scheduled dates for ESY in the procedures document. The ARD Committee will determine if a student needs to attend some, all or additional dates. Review the attendance, if the student attended previously. Contact Leslee Weaks, if additional dates are needed.

Locations

The location for ESY may or may not be the location a student currently attends or will attend during the school year. Campus projects/construction and student numbers factor into the ESY locations selected. Parents will be notified of the ESY location by Leslee Weaks.

Staff

ESY Staff

All ESY staff is hired through HR's process of using Talent Ed. No one can be hired without completing the Talent Ed application. Typically, this application is open and closes in March. Please keep an eye out for an email from HR for when the application window is open. Even if you can't work the whole summer, you might be able to fill in a day or two as a sub for some extra spending money! You will need to complete an application to sub. ***Please let your assistants know when the application is open to apply!***
