What's the difference?
Prose
Poetry
- Uses sentences and paragraphs. The lines go to the edge of the page.
- Uses lines and line breaks
- Can have a variety of themes
- Use imagery and fig. language to create tone
- Some poems tell stories
- Can be read aloud, but it sounds like conversational speech (normal rhythm).
- Meant to be heard-the sound is important
- Can be fiction (imagined) or nonfiction (real)
- The shape or visual appearance of a poem can be important
- Looks like a large block of words- all prose looks roughly the same,
- Usually a strong focus evoking emotion
- Focus can be on telling a narrative (tpry) or relaying information (articles)
