Scientific Method
01
Observation(Question)
02
Make an observation about the world around you and ask why it happens.
Research
Get some background Knowledge on what you observed.
03
Hypothesis
A hypothessis is a fancy name for an educated guess after doing some research.
04
Testing
This is where we start to conduct experiments about our hypothesis.
05
Analyze the Data
Look over the data you collected while doing your experiment . (if you don't write it down it doesn't count)
06
Conclusion
After collecting and looking over your data you can now say if your hypothesis was correct of needs to change.
Hypothesis
A hypothesis is very similar to a guess. The only difference is that you are not blindly guessing becuase you have done research on the subject. You are also guessing about the outcome of your experement not how everything works.
- Examples
- The ball will bounce four times before coming to rest
- The chemical will turn red when introduced to milk.
Analyze the Data
You are almost done with the scientific method! You have asked a question, you have done reseach, you made a guess, and did the experiment. This is the place if skipped, none of it counts. You have to write down your findings or it doesn't count.
- Organize your data into something that you can read.
- Graphs help visualize our data.
- Charts can help us compare info.
- This lets other people look over our data in the future
Conclusion
You have finally made it to the end of the line. You can look over your data and determine if your hypothesis was proven or disproven. If you prove your hypothesis this is the end of the road, but you can also revise your hypothesis and try again.
- Having a hypothesis that is disproven is not a failure, in fact it leads to even more science later.
- The conclusion is the least important part of the scientific method, just the cherry on the top.
Testing
Once you have created a hypothesis you have to test wether it is correct or not. Testing is a specific and follows a set of rules to be preformed correctly.
- Eleminate all but one veriable to test.
- The test must be repeatable
- You must be able to collect reliable data from the test.
- The test must be safe for people to preform now and in the future.
Observation (Questions)
Take a look at the world around you. Is there something that makes you curious how it works? Why it looks that way? Why they act like that? Science is the place to ask and the first step to the scientific method.
- Why does the Earth spin on its axis?
- How does the ball bounce over and over?
- Why do kids eat their boogers?
- What causes germs to spread?
Research
Most people try to skip this step in the scienfic method, but it is very important. You won't be able to create a good experiment if you don't know anything about what you are questioning.
- Use your chrombook to get info.
- Books are a fantastic place to start.
- Ask your teacher if they know anything.
- Two heads are better than one (work together)
