En mai 2013, Jean-Philippe Meunier, amoureux de l'Irlande et des sports gaéliques et Franck Jackson, patron de l'institution "The Connemara Irish club", créent le club de Football Gaélique de Bordeaux. Il sera rapidement surnommé "Burdigaela" en clin d’oeil aux origines de la ville.

Le club compte actuellement environ 80 licencié.es de 11 à 50 ans, dont une vingtaine de femmes. Le club accueille depuis toujours des membres de multiples horizons géographiques (France toutes régions, Irlande, Canada, Australie, Etats-Unis, ...) entretenant un esprit communautaire fort dans lequel chacune et chacun peut trouver sa place.

Burdigaelóg de l'Assomption
Le club en a rêvé, c'est désormais fait ! Depuis 2013, Bordeaux compte sa section Jeunes. En partenariat avec le collège Assomption Sainte Clotide et sous le coaching de Shaundel Blaix, membre historique du club, une dizaine de licencié.es âgée.es entre 11 et 15 ans participent aux entrainements hebdomadaires. L'équipe a même pris part à ses 1ers tournois en 2024. En France, les matchs de jeunes se jouent à 9 contre 9 avec un minimum de contact physique, et se déroulent pendant des tournois où chaque équipe joue plusieurs matchs.

Depuis sa création, le club n'a jamais caché ses envies de bien figurer parmi les places fortes du gaelic en France. Les 3 équipes sont toujours ambitieuses et malgré une concurrence de plus en plus élevée au niveau national, parviennent à rester performantes.

En dehors des Irlandaises et des Irlandais qui nous rejoignent chaque année, très rares sont celles et ceux qui ont déjà entendu parler des sports gaéliques avant d'essayer. La notion de progression et d'humilité sont donc au coeur de notre ADN que l'on soit là depuis 10 ans ou 1 mois. Chacun son rythme.

Le Burdigaela est comme une grande famille dans laquelle tout le monde trouvera sa place quelles que soient les raisons pour lesquelles on le rejoint. Tout le monde est bienvenu au club. Les liens sont forts entre les membres sur et en dehors des terrains.

le football gaÉlique
Le football gaélique (en irlandais : Peil, Peil Ghaelach ou Caid) est le sport le plus populaire d'Irlande. Si le jeu ressemble à un mélange de rugby à XV et de football, il est moins violent que le rugby car les plaquages et les immobilisations sont interdits. Les règles sont simples et offrent plus de liberté à l'équipe qui attaque. Le football gaélique se joue par équipes de 15 joueurs en Irlande (11 en France car les terrains ne sont pas adaptés), sur un terrain rectangulaire avec des buts en forme de H mêlant les buts de rugby à XV pour leur forme élevée et ceux de football pour la partie basse. Le premier objectif est de marquer des points en envoyant par un coup de pied ou en boxant la balle dans les buts adverses. L’équipe qui a le plus haut score à la fin du match remporte la partie. Si le ballon rentre dans les buts : 3 points Il passe au-dessus des perches : 1 point
le hurling / camogie
Le hurling - camogie dans sa version féminine - se joue avec une crosse appelée hurley ou camán utilisée pour taper dans une balle nommée sliotar. Ce sport est une forme de soule à crosse. Ce sport est considéré comme étant le sport d’équipe le plus rapide sur herbe et est particulièrmeent spectaculaire. Le hurling partage plusieurs aspects du football gaélique, comme le terrain, le nombre de joueurs, la manière de compter les points et une partie de la terminologie.
le handball gaÉlique
Le handball gaélique (en irlandais : liathróid láimhe) est un sport similaire au racquetball et au squash. Le jeu se pratique à deux ou quatre joueurs. La plus importante différence avec le squash est que les joueurs frappent la balle avec leur main recouverte d’un gant au lieu de le faire avec une raquette. On peut se servir indifféremment des deux mains.

GAELIC FOOTBALL
Gaelic football (Irish: Peil Ghaelach; short name Peil,Ulster Scots: Gaelic fitbaw), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. A form of football, it is played between two teams of 15 players (11 in France) on a rectangular grass pitch . The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goal (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goal and over a crossbar 2.5 metres (8 ft 2 in) above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals.
hurling / camogie
Hurling - camogie in its feminine version - is played with a stick called a hurl, hurley or camán used to hit a ball called a sliotar. This sport is a form of lacrosse. This sport is considered to be the fastest team sport on grass and is particularly spectacular. Hurling shares several aspects of Gaelic football, such as the pitch, the number of players, how to count points and some of the terminology.
GAELIC HANDBALL
Gaelic handball is a sport where players hit a ball with a hand or fist against a wall in such a way as to make a shot the opposition cannot return, and that may be played with two (singles) or four players (doubles). The sport is similar to American handball, Welsh handball, fives, Basque pelota, Valencian frontó, and more remotely to racquetball or squash.

Les sports gaéliques sont très confidentiels en France, puisqu'ils vienent de passer la barre des 1000 licencié.es. Néanmoins, ils sont en pleine expension et des clubs continuent de se créer chaque année. Si le football gaélique est de loin le plus pratiqué en France parmi les 3 disciplines, le hurling/camogie et le handball se développent de plus en plus sur les dernières années.
La France s'est imposée comme l'une des nations majeures du développement des sports gaéliques hors Irlande. Les équipes de France masculines et féminines brillent régulièrement lors des compétitions internationales. Lors des derniers championnats du monde 2023, elles ont respectivement terminé finalistes et demi-finalistes. Depuis sa création, le Burdigaela a toujours fourni des joueuses et joueurs aux sélections nationales et régionales (Gascogne).

Gaelic games are very confidential in France, since they have just passed the 1,000-member mark. Nevertheless, they are in full expansion and clubs continue to be created every year. If Gaelic football is by far the most practiced in France among the 3 disciplines, hurling/ camogie and handball are developing more and more in recent years.
France has established itself as one of the major nations in the development of Gaelic games outside Ireland. The French men’s and women’s teams regularly perform in international competitions. During the last 2023 GAA World Games they finish as finalists and semi-finalists respectively. Since its creation, Burdigaela has always provided players for the national and regional selections (Gascony).

Disputée à l'automne, la Ligue du Sud-Ouest réunit les 3 clubs historiques de la région (Bordeaux, Toulouse, Niort) et depuis 2023 les 3 nouveaux : Agen, Pau et Poitiers.
La LSO se déroule sur 3 manches, chaque équipe marque des points par tournoi. Le vainqueur étant celui qui en cumule le plus.
Niort
Depuis 2018, les meilleurs joueurs de la LSO, non appelés en équipe de France représentent la Gascogne lors des compétitions internationales. Chez les hommes, la Gascogne a remporté la Coupe du monde de 2ème division à l'été 2023 à Derry (Irlande du Nord).

Played in the autumn, the South West League brings together the 3 historic clubs of the region (Bordeaux, Toulouse, Niort) and since 2023 the 3 new ones: Agen, Pau and Poitiers.
SWL takes place over 3 rounds, each team scores points per tournament. The winner is the one with the most points.

Since 2018, the best players of the SWL, not called in team France represent Gascony in international competitions. On the men’s side, Gascony won the 2nd Division World Cup in the summer of 2023 in Derry (NI).

ORGANIZATION OF THE FRENCH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024
After 2 failed attempts in 2020 (COVID) then 2022 (heat wave), Burdigaela will host the Finals of the French Championships in Blanquefort on June 15, 2024 (Stade de Breillan and Stade Miart). More than 500 players expected. By hoping this time, it will be the right one. On the left, the cancelled 2022 Finals poster on the eve of the event.

Après 2 tentatives avortées en 2020 (COVID) puis 2022 (canicule), le Burdigaela accueillera les Finales des Championnats de France à Blanquefort le 15 juin 2024 (Stade de Breillan et Stade Miart). Plus de 500 joueuses et joueurs attendus. En espérant que cette fois-ci, ce sera la bonne. A gauche, l'affiche des Finales 2022 annulées à la veille de l'événement

En présence de l'ambassadrice d'Irlande, la ville de Blanquefort et le Burdigaela inaugurent l'un des tous premiers terrains de football gaélique en France. En 2023, seules 3 villes (Rennes, Bordeaux et Nantes) disposent de terrains spécifiquement dédiés.

In the presence of the Irish ambassador, the town of Blanquefort and the Burdigaela inaugurated one of the first Gaelic football fields in France. In 2023, only 3 cities (Rennes, Bordeaux and Nantes) have pitchs specifically dedicated.

Organization of the first tournament in Bordeaux
Less than a year after its creation, the club is already organizing its first tournament and it will be a round of the French women’s championship. The opportunity for the women’s team to win their first match...against Rennes, which is THE French reference for 10 years.

Création de la 1ère section Jeunes
Sous l'impulsion de Shaundel Blaix, enseignante au sein du collège Assomption Sainte Clotilde à Bordeaux, la 1ère section Jeunesse de Bordeaux - Burdigaelóg de l'Assomption - est créée en 2023. Elle compte une quinzaine de jeunes âgé.es de 11 à 15 ans.

Organisation du premier tournoi à Bordeaux
Moins d'un an après sa création, le club organise déjà son 1er tournoi et ce sera une manche de championnat de France féminin. L'occasion pour l'équipe féminine de remporter leur premier match...contre Rennes qui plus est, LA référence française depuis 10 ans.
