Why clothes matter

He is wearing a casual outfit: a denim jacket, jeans and sneakers, maybe the clothes he wears in his free time. However, since he is an artist, perhaps this is what he wears when he is working. He also has many badges on his jacket and is holding a magazine with Elvis Presley on the front page, so we can guess he is a music fan. He is a British artist, and has a Union Jack flag, but the pocket of his jacket is an American flag. If we take into account the Elvis Presley magazine as well as the flags, we can infer that he is a fan of American pop culture.

Why clothes matter

The video highlights how people can be prejudiced and often tend to jump to conclusions about who we are based on our background, work, leisure activities and political outlook. Nevertheless, clothes can help correct these assumptions. Getting dressed is like being a tour guide around ourselves, to highlight our personality and clear up misconceptions. We can take the example of painter Peter Blake, who tended to wear a denim jacket, jeans and trainers which reflected his involvement in the pop-art movement. He was considered aloof by his peers because he was an intellectual. In fact, his clothes simply show that he was interested in pop music and saw his art as manual work. Clothes embody the wearer’s values and let people know who they really are. That’s why with good friends we don’t need to pay attention to the way we dress, since they already know us, whereas with strangers we may feel anxious about the impression we want to give.
