  • The first People in Britannia were the Britanni, this was around the Iron age 1200 bc, the land was called after them.
  • After them, the Roman empire was ruled most of the world and the UK wasn´t going to be less. The Romans brought the Latin language.
  • However, the Romans left and Anglo and Saxon arrived bringing the Christianity with them, which was a great success. They added around 2000 words to the English language.

In 1066 William the conqueror became King of England bringing more than 1000 French words to the English language

English was the main language but the vikings spoke Danish and latin was also spoken by other parts of the community

Anglos and Saxons joined up to get rid of the vikings

The 100 year war began

Anglo - Norman period 1066-1350

On this period of time the king was speaking French, the church was speaking Latin and the common people were speaking English . However, after the black death everyone was back to speaking English

The Royal society: privileged men related to the field of science, added new words related to the human anatomy

Shakespeare: added more than 2000 words ans phrases to the English language

The English empire grow to many parts of the world, and were influenced by different languages

King James created a new version of the bible in 1611

MODERN eNGLISH

When the English language got to America, it keeps on developing, creating a lot of new American-English words that are usually only used on that continent.

The language underwent a change when the internet was introduced, resulting in its globalization.

Movies and music from the United States were a great influence on the rest of the world.

English has become the number one international language.
