INSTRUCTIONS
Hey there, young adventurers! Before we begin, make sure to read these directions really closely. During the game, be on the lookout for things you can play with, like buttons, shapes, arrows, or pictures you can click on. They'll help you go to different places full of fun! If you ever want to go back, just click on a blue arrow. Remember, only use it when you really need to go back. Ready? Let's start the adventure!
let's go!
A special planet where its residents are just about to discover how everything works! To begin our adventure, let's head over to the greenhouse. There are some cool things I'd like to share with you before we dive in.
Welcome to Climatopia!
Hey, friends! Guess what? I'm like a detective here. For a long time, I've been thinking a lot about how things on Climatopia, our special planet, have been changing a whole bunch. The reason is something called climate change, which is making the planet act differently. So, to help us learn about it, I made a small pretend planet inside this special greenhouse. It's like a tiny world that shows how our big world works. Cool, right?
Feel free to spend as much time as you want in the greenhouse. When you're all done exploring, you can simply walk out the open door whenever you're ready!
Hi there, don't worry! I think that investigator is friendly, but he's got lots to do. Let's go together and give him some space. I want to show you what's inside this factory, it's pretty cool!
But nowadays, the people are not very happy because they think their lives are getting a bit harder. Look around and see if you can figure out why they might be feeling this way. What do you notice?
Soooo, welcome to my city! As you can see, it is wealthy and developed because of industralization.
I want to chat with you about how things are made, especially materials like plastics that don't go away easily (like those PFAS things). Let's learn more about them together!
Come with me!
Look at the screen up there. Those PFAS things are really serious. They've made animals sick in the US not too long ago, and that's not good for the environment at all.
We're new friends, but we'll get to know each other better. Since we don't have a lot of time, I want to quickly show you something that's happening because of climate change:
But wait Fire! Consequences can be on the completly opposite side of the table.
When the climate changes, rain patterns change too. This can make droughts last longer, which is really bad for farms, water, and the food we have. It's a big problem!
There's no time to waste! Follow me!!
DROUGHT!!!
But not only that! When the icy tops of the world melt, the oceans get bigger and can cover up places near the coasts. This means homes for animals can disappear, and it's not good at all.
When the poles melt, it's a big problem that everyone needs to work together to fix. We have to take care of these special places and the animals that live there. This will help keep Earth healthy and safe for a long time.
Yes!! You're right!! Please go show them what can happen. Follow her!
Because the world is getting warmer, big chunks of ice in the Arctic and Antarctic are melting super fast. This is causing problems for the places nearby and even far away. It's a big deal for everyone!
Because of climate change, there are big problems like floods, storms, and droughts that are making some people leave their homes. They're like climate refugees who need to find safer places to live with better conditions.
Wait... you don't know who we are?? Come with us, you'll know soon enough
All this might sound bleak. But there's something you can do, with our help....
A lot of people who lost their homes now live in this camp. Their old homes are very far from here.
Hi there! What is your name?
Now is your time!!
Most of the planet's organisms and inhabitants have been destroyed. §name§, you are the only one who can give Climatopia a second chance...
Climatopia is in big trouble because of choices people made. Before, the folks living there didn't pay attention to the messages the planet was giving them...
Welcome §name§! You only have one chance to stop history from repeating itself! But don't worry, you will not walk this path alone.
We are the 4 Elements!
I am air, with me you will fly through the present
I am water, follow me §name§!
I am fire, I will show you the future
I am soil, I will show you the past
Follow me!
Have you heard of the butterfly effect? During this journey, the choices you make will matter a lot for Climatopia's future, all about climate change. To help Climatopia, we'll start making choices from the beginning of the problem. You've got three friends who can travel through time with you. They'll show you how things changed in Climatopia's history and ask you to make decisions. Just be careful, because your choices really matter!
This is your first decision...
0 to 3
How much can your choices affect Climatopia's future?
4 to 7
8 to 10
let's go to our first stop!
But first, a bit back in time...
They went without you, follow them!
Hello §name§! I am soil. I understand if you're a bit confused. It's because we're not in your time now. We're actually in the past, back in the 1800s when Climatopia was different during the Industrial Revolution.
A long time ago, before the Industrial Revolution, people worked really hard using their hands. They had tough jobs in hot places, and there wasn't much time for fun. Only rich people could relax and have fun. But things changed with the Industrial Revolution. Factories started using machines, which made work faster. This meant people had more free time than before.
A long time ago, they made special engines called steam engines that used coal really well. These engines made trains, ships, and big machines work better. They changed how society and business worked a lot!
next
Now it's time for your first big choice. Remember, what you decide will change Climatopia's history.
What do you think could be done to make steam engines have less of a bad effect?
The Industrial Revolution was super important. It's what helped us get to where we are today with all the things that have changed and improved!
Think of a plan to manage how we use this energy and make sure we don't use up all the natural stuff too quickly.
Create fewer machines that use this type of energy.
INDEED!
Remember, the Industrial Revolution was important for us to grow, but we needed a plan to use energy better and not hurt the environment so much.
Keep it up §name§ !
well...
That idea might help, but it would only work for a little while. We need to think about what's best for the kids and grandkids too.
However....!!
You're right! The Industrial Revolution was super important and needed for how things are today!
do you want to save climatopia?
The things that happened and how fast they happened were too much for Climatopia to handle. It's like the planet got hurt, and it's hard to make it better again.
When factories and machines came, lots of people from the countryside went to live in cities to find jobs. This is called urbanization.
Because so many people came to cities, they needed new things like roads, houses, schools, and hospitals. This made the cities grow and become better places to live.
But because of this, the air in Climatopia got dirtier and made the planet warmer.
If this is true... one question...
You know how plants breathe in carbon dioxide? Well, there's been a lot more carbon dioxide released into the air, and that's why there's more of it in the atmosphere.
But because of this, the air in Climatopia got dirtier and made the planet warmer.
You know how plants breathe in carbon dioxide? Well, there's been a lot more carbon dioxide released into the air, and that's why there's more of it in the atmosphere.
Deforestation
Because so many people came to cities, they needed new things like roads, houses, schools, and hospitals. This made the cities grow and become better places to live.
Even though we needed fewer machines, industrialization was still really important. It made lots of people move to cities from the countryside to find jobs.
But because of this, the air in Climatopia got dirtier and made the planet warmer.
If carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants, then, why has carbon dioxide increased in the atmosphere?
Clue: The increase in global temperature is due to the increase in greenhouse gases. The main gas is carbon dioxide. Plants absorb CO2 and break down the carbon in oxygen. They use th carbon to feed and grow and expel the oxygen.
Because so many people came to cities, they needed new things like roads, houses, schools, and hospitals. This made the cities grow and become better places to live.
Deforestation
You're right! Industrialization was super important because it made lots of people move from the countryside to cities for jobs.
That's it, deforestation!
Now that you understand, what do you think is the best thing we can do to stop cutting down too many trees?
Generate more crop fields?
Measures to reforest deforested areas?
Open urban parks?
that's it! dEFORESTATION!

Open urban parks?
It would be a very good solution §name§!
We will see if this is also a good measure for the future of Climatopia...
We would be taking care of our green areas, balancing the previous deforestation.
CONTINUING WITH THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION...
UNDOUBTELY, PARKS ARE VERY GOOD FOR CITIZENS §name§...
Is this enough to save Climatopia?
CONTINUING WITH THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION...
But, using those machines alone isn't the best way to stop cutting down too many trees. They don't make up for all the harm caused by deforestation.
There is more!
Now is your turn!! If you had to travel from Spain to Italy, which transport would you choose?

Industrialization has facilitated international trade and globalization. The mass production of goods has made it possible to export products
Now is your turn!! If you had to travel from Spain to Italy, which transport would you choose?
MMM...Farmland? On the contrary, this option forces us to have to deforest more areas!
BUT THERE IS MORE!

Train

Very good! Indeed, is the best option in terms of environmental care among the three that we have proposed to you. Because of the number of people who can ride it, and the amount of gases it emits.
Well, my work is done, here I leave you with air to fly through the present. Good luck.
As much as it may seem like a good method of transportation, the boat is nevertheless one of the most pulluting options.
Well, my work is done, here I leave you with air to fly through the present. Good luck.
It is true that it moves a lot of people, but it is also true that it pollutes the air and the sea.
The airplane was a great advance when it came to transporting passengers in a short time, it helped a lot to globalization. However, it is the transport that pollutes our space the most...
Well, my work is done, here I leave you with air to fly through the present. Good luck!
Sadly, it is also one of the most used, even for short distances and for transporting few people (such as private jets). Climatopia's past has not improved…
Maybe this sounds a bit more familiar to you… What comes to mind when I talk about migration, overproduction, or consumption?
Exactly, welcome to the present!
As you know, climate change has many consequences. In many parts of the world droughts, floods and other catastrophes cause many families to lose their homes and have to move to other places, these people are called climate refugees.

what about the industrial sector...
Wow! Your willingness to give up some of your privileges to help others in need is truly commendable. The industrial sector plays a significant role in the generation of pollution, particularly air and water pollution.
There are three main industrial sectors that pollust most. The second most polluting sector is... TEXTILE!
Do you think so? well...
While the state indeed has a responsibility to address such situations, it's also crucial for individuals and society as a whole to take part in supporting those in need. By coming together, we can create a stronger and more resilient community. What about the industrial sector?

We can consider green policies something like this:
1. In cases where environmental damage cannot be prevented, the debt should be repaid
2. Educate and train employees in environmental practices
Fantastic choice! Green policies are rules and plans made by governments and groups to help take care of our planet. They're like instructions that say how we should protect nature and do things that can keep the Earth healthy for a long time. Watch the video and answer to the questions.
Good effort! Choosing food that comes from nearby is better for the Earth. Sometimes, getting food from far away places creates pollution. It's smart to pick some foods from close by and some from far away to help the planet.

WELCOME TO THE FUTURE!!
Congratulations on reaching the future §name§!
Your smart choices helped make Climatopia's future really awesome!
Because you care about the Earth and do good things for it, the world is becoming a nicer place.
You're doing great! By not giving up, you'll keep making Climatopia's future even better.
HOWEVER, AS YOU HAVE MADE THE RIGHT CHOICES, THIS WON'T HAPPEN! LET'S SEE WHAT WILL happen ...
Well done!
The decisions you made in the past have led Climatopia to a critical situation. However, there is still hope to turn things around.
Remember how we talked about the Earth getting warmer? Well, when ice melts, it makes more gases in the air that make things even warmer. It's like a problem that keeps making itself worse.
Welcome to the future §name§ !!!
Think carefully about what you decide to do next. Your choices can change the future of Climatopia. What you do is important, and if you make good choices, we can make the world better and happier.
Good luck!
Oh no! Welcome to the future §name§!!!
Unfortunately, your previous decisions have brought Climatopia to a critical situation.
Every decision you make from now on carries tremendous weight and can determine the survival of Climatopia!
It's crucial that you prioritize sustainability, take responsibility, and make wise choices to reverse the catastrophic path. The fate of Climatopia rests in your hands. Best of luck, and let's work together to save our world.
Which of the following measures would you carry out to prevent Climatopia's temperature rise?

Sadly, your decisions have led Climatopia to be an unlivable planet... We are sure that it was not your intention, and that is why, if you want, you can see what the ideal Climatopia would be like if you had made the most environmentally sensitive decisions. So that you can do better on your planet. Are you up for it?

Environmental awareness is now an essential priority in our curriculum. Pupils, from a very young age, learn to recycle, to understand consumption in a different way.
How is it going? Indeed, thanks to the mobilisation of citizens, education was the first thing we changed.

WRONG ANSWER!
Try again if you want to save Climatopia!
Citizenship forced us to rethink the development of our business. It was no longer about single-use, plastics or clothes made with cheap labour. We had to think of new models... and so we did! Moreover, we comply with all public policies and with what the institutions tell us, within our privacy, of course. We are aware that we must use renewable energies, that we cannot use energy sources that pollute or damage ecosystems. That is why, when we want to set up our industries, we do so with the environment in mind. We are aware that, if we continued at that rate of production, we would not have a planet to sell our products on, and that we had to make peace. But the people who really changed our thinking were the citizens.
They no longer bought our polluting resources, nor did they consume our services unless they were environmentally friendly. So we adapted to the new Climatopia. To an ideal Climatopia.
We have many policies that we decided to put in place when we saw that there was no turning back. I'm going to tell you the main ones, although we have a lot of them. Mainly, we use green energy for everything, there is no other type of energy. Thus, we use wind, solar, geometric, oceanic energy... both public and private. In addition, all buildings are equipped with natural energy sources. That's it! Like solar panels. Another big measure is to protect ecosystems. It is a high priority that we at the public level protect all our environments. Ecosystems were losing their ability to combat climate change, so we decided to protect rivers, wetlands, forests, oceans... And so far, as you can see, it has been one of the best decisions we have made.
We have restored the poles, the oceans are at their best, free of plastics and toxics, the forests are not burning and are not suffering from fires, and the rivers have their most abundant flows.
Also, if we have to travel long distances, we try to travel by train or, if not, we try to offset carbon. This is something that is national policy, and everybody is aware of it. If you see the streets a bit dark it is because we have been able to reduce the consumption of light, which, as well as being completely environmentally friendly, we try to turn on only the light that we are going to use. In this case, you will see a couple of streetlights lit for people's safety when they walk down the street.
PFAS
per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances
"The magic material"
They have been used in the manufacturing of products such as non-stick coatings (Teflon), firefighting foams, waterproofing materials (Gore-Tex), packaging materials, and many others. This material has been found in almost all individuals who underwent a study on the detection of this material in humans. (95% in a study made by BIOAMBIENT.ES between 2007 and 2019)
We have completely changed the content so that the environment is something transversal that they receive from the moment they arrive at the school. And all schools work in the same way. Awareness-raising and prevention is our priority. All schools are public schools, so all children have access to quality and sustainable education. The school also carries out actions for the environment, those that are dictated to us by the institutions, but we do them with the awareness that this is what is necessary to live in the world we live in. Families are involved and collaborate 100% with the schools, there is real cooperation and everyone is aware that the environment comes first. There are also solidarity canteens, vegetable gardens and playgrounds that are perfectly responsible and respectful of the environment.
The companies are the ones that had the worst time, but they adapted very well to all the decisions that the citizens made. Do you want to go and talk to them? Click on the private sector button to find out.
We reached a point where we understood that we had to do everything in our power to solve the situation. Everybody recycles every day of the year. We reuse almost everything we can, we have an exchange system and once a month people exchange what they no longer use for other things they need, until the item in question has been given its full life. We only use what we need, so we have reduced consumption a lot, we only buy the things we are going to need. Clothes, food, electrical appliances... We try to give everything a second life, either in our house or in our neighbour's house.
