What are the future perspectives of seawater desalinization in Ecuador?

Desalinization is a process by which salts and other minerals are extracted from seawater to make it appropriate for human use, farm irrigation, or industrial use.

The Desalinization Process

The desalinization process can be divided in three stages:

  • Pretreatment
  • Desalinization
  • And, post-treatment

First desalinization plant (Ecuador)
  • Located in Puna island.
  • This project began in mid-2018.
  • Before this, the island was supplied with water from two shallow wells (not suitable for consumption).
  • With reverse osmosis technology, water is purified.

Future Perspectives

Widespread desalinization requires substantial funding.

Seawater desalinization is expected to grow due to rising demand for freshwater.

Desalinization benefits remote communities without regular water access.
