What is literature?

  • Written artistic works, especially those with a high and lasting artistic value.
  • Classical/modern literature.
Types of writing:

What is VERSE?

What is PROSE?

Is a style used that does not follow a structure of rhyming or meter. It is used to directly communicate concepts, ideas, and stories to a reader. Prose follows an almost naturally verbal flow of writing that is most common among fictional and non-fictional literature such as novels, magazines, and journals.

A verse can be understood as a literary composition representing one line poetry, which has a definite rhythm. IIt requires an arrangement of words in a definite pattern, so as to produce a harmonious rhythm.

Literary Genres: Are categories that authors use to describe the primary content and tone of their writing. Literary genres typically describe writing styles such as poetry, essays, novels, short stories and plays.

Fiction (Fables, folktales, fairy tales, etc.)

Non-fiction (Autobiography, biography, essays, narrative, perodical, etc.)

Play/Drama( Melodrama, musical, comedy, tragedy, etc.)

Southern Gothic is an artistic subgenre of fiction that is heavily influenced by Gothic elements and the American South. Common themes of Southern Gothic include storytelling of deeply flawed, disturbing or eccentric characters who may be involved in hoodoo,[1] decayed or derelict settings,[2] grotesque situations, and other sinister events relating to or stemming from poverty, alienation, crime, or violence.

Novel genre

Bildungsroman is a literary genre that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from childhood to adulthood (coming of age),[1] in which character change is important.[2][3][4][a] The term comes from the German words Bildung ("education", alternatively "forming") and Roman ("novel").

Historical context

Alabama is part of America’s Deep South. In the 19th century it was one of the slave states below the Mason-Dixon line, with a reputation for treating slaves harshly. After the Civil War it was slow to recognize that African-Americans had any rights, and they had a hard time in the 1930s when the novel was set. It was written in 1959, during the Civil rights era; again Alabama was particularly reluctant to allow blacks voting rights or good education. This was partly because the former slave states of the Deep South have high black populations (around 50%). The whites were terrified that if they got the vote, the blacks would take revenge for their past mistreatment. They were, of course, wrong.

If we want to have any hope of mendingour broken society, family and parenting is where we've got to start. David Cameron.

  • The mockingbird has the prettiest song of any bird native to North America. Texas adopted the “mocker” as its state bird in 1927.
  • The song of the mockingbird is a medley of the calls of many other birds. Each imitation is repeated two or three times, then another song is started, all in rapid succession.
  • The mockingbird is also known as a fierce protector of its nest and environment. It is sometimes seen swooping down on a dog, cat, or predator that may be venturing too close to the bird’s protected territory.
