What is homesickness?
Homesickness can arise from several different factors but mainly comes from when you find it difficult to adjust to a new environment, or you are feeling lonely or cut off from your regular support system. Homesickness is more than missing home or family. It's also feeling longing and feeling out of place. It can be caused by confusion or problems understanding a new environment, culture or language, which can be known as "culture shock"
Symptoms of Homesickness
- Strong urge to go back home
- Feeling of loneliness and sadness
- Strong feelings of anxiety
- Lack of motivation
- Loss of confidence
- Depressive thoughts
- Frequent mood swings
- Unexplainable pains
- Sense of insecurity
- Simple task appearing difficult and challenging
Things you can do to feel better
- Give yourself some time to feel homesick
- Pick real life over social media
- Meet new people
- Make a bucket list for things to do
- Make your new home a home
- Exercise regularly or go outside and explore
- Schedule some "me" time
- Learn something new
- Work on positive thinking
- Above all, talk to others about how you feel!
