Moving Up! The transition to MS
The impact of students' school transition transcends throughout their school life and leaves a lasting impression for many years to come. A small interaction with a teacher, a subject or another student can influence the child’s opinion of school life and education right into adulthood. Many parents of children who have negative experiences of school also report negative experiences of school when they were children.

What can we do?
Give clear feedback so they can improve. Do not replicate criteria
Explain the purpose and objective of the class or task at hand
Scaffold the difficulty of the tasks. Make sure there is progression
Take your time to explain activities, clarify, and walk around the classroom
Give them the chance to improve formatives so they learn.
Model the skills you want them to develop. Give them opportunity to fail
Guide them, don't expect them to achieve success on the first attempt.
Make clarifications. Criteria should be clear for your students
No negotiables

- This can make the process of transitioning to a new environment more challenging.
It is not us, do not take anything personal
- They will be given an exercise book and textbook for their individual subjects, and are expected to remember to bring the correct books to the correct lessons.
- The school day looks quite different, with just a few minutes to get between lessons and sanctions given for lateness.
- After school and weekends can look quite different from primary school, as children will have to manage their homework schedule and independent study time.
- In Year 7, children face many organizational challenges and progress towards greater independence.
