Course Design Standards
Takeaways
Context: Queen's University Belfast
- Consistancy in course navigation is crucial to learners
- All involved parties need to give input on updates
- Researching what other institutions have done for similar programs will help us with design, don't reinvent the wheel
- Be patient
- Covid forced a shift to online learning
- Surveys were used to track student's feedback on online course structures
- Results showed that learners needed more consistancy in online course design, thus starting collaborative effort between staff, faculty, and students to design minimum standards
Next Steps
- Task force that integrates faculty, staff, and learner perspective on standards of course design
- Updating or designing a survey that helps our team see where we can make improvments

Student Data
- Pre-Program Survey: Should ask students about their previous online learning experience.
- Helps Course Manager and Coordinator get an idea of what challenges learners might face. Paints an overall picture of how prepared our learners are for online learning accross programs.
- Workshop 1: Asks learnes about attending a Canvas tutorial and getting materials ahead of time.
- Click Tracking: Take time to monitor how a learner is navigating our courses and see where we can make improvments
- Mid-Program Eval: Has 2 questions that could help education team, quality of online course experience and ease of online learning tools. However, we can't get enough information from the student responses or there is not enough feedback from learners.
- Department and School Collaboration: Lots of other institutions were demonstrating their cross department collaborations. Look into how Extension School or Masters Programs asks for feedback and what they implement for standards. Collaborate more with the TLT team

- Once a new employee completed onboarding, they took over the task of updating the course to ensure the content was always accurate.
- Surveyed staff to assess how the onboarding process was and see where improvments could be made
Move all training documents and master template files to sharepoint. Helps to centralize all content into one space that can be easily edited by all team members
