• Epitelio de unión (JE), que provee el contacto entre la encía y el diente.

El periodonto (peri = alrededor, odontos = diente) comprende los siguientes tejidos: la encía, el ligamento periodontal, el cemento radicular y el hueso alveolar.

Insertar el diente al alveoloResistir y resolver las fuerzas generadas. Defensas contra influencias nocivas del medio ambiente. Mantener la integridad de las superficies separando el medio exterior e interior.

• Epitelio del surco: que enfrenta al diente sin estar en contacto con la superficie del esmalte.

• Epitelio bucal: que apunta a la cavidad bucal.
