Reflection

Curriculum maps, pacing guides, and lesson plans are all very important parts of the teaching and learning process throughout each school year. Each of these has its own unique benefits, but all of them inform teachers with data that enables them to better direct the learning process, contributing to improving student achievement. Curriculum maps are collaboratively designed by educators and primarily used to assess for gaps in learning. The goal of curriculum mapping is to align standards, lessons, hands-on experience, assessments, and other important learning considerations, within and across grade levels. Curriculum maps uses backwards design concentrating on the desired learning goals for students and then planning lessons from there. Students can engage in inquiry based learning to spark inspiration for topics and subjects that teachers use to teach the goals of the curriculum maps. Curriculum maps can really benefit schools by encouraging collaboration, creating a valuable resource, and increasing educator efficiency (Randles). Many pacing guides are created by school district leaders who usually use state testing as input (Lynch). These use backward design to address a wide breadth of standards in a school year. Inquiry-based learning needs to be initiated by administrators and educators in the classroom. Lesson plans are teacher created guides that outline specific standards students need to learn, how the material will be taught, and how students will show their understanding of the learning objectives. Educators use backwards design to determine objectives or essential questions as the goals they want students to learn. They then use inquiry-based learning activities to engage students and guide them towards mastery of the learning objectives. Lesson learning objectives fall in line with pacing guides and curriculum maps. Using all these planning tools collaboratively will lead to more effective educators and increases in student achievement. When teachers take the time to prepare and appropriately collaborate on curriculum maps, review pacing guides, and create cohesive lesson plans, they will be well equipped for guiding their students to success.

Paciong Guide

Created by district administrators who account for state testing throughout each academic year.

Guides educators to know what is expected of students across the district and support testing.

Students are better prepared for state testing and learning is fairly consistent across different schools.

Lesson Plan

Created by teachers daily, to guide students towards understanding standards.

Teachers use daily lessons to guage how students are progressing towards learning the determined goals.

Students complete engaging activities and engage in discussions to work toward mastery of learning objectives.

Curriculum Map

Created by Teachers to align standards and teaching within a grade level and across multiple grade levels.

Shows teachers where there may be gaps in learning or redundancies.

Students benefit from the structured and cohesive learning environment they are provided
