The father and boy are starving, and they come across a grand house on the road. The boy thought it was a bad idea to go in, but the father insists on going, because they are starving. They go through the house exploring and find a locked door to the cellar. After breaking the lock with a spade, they go inside and find a couple of people, naked, and huddling against the wall. The people cry to them for help, but the father and boy run. After they get out, they see a group coming towards them, and they run. They run out of the house, across a field, across the road, into the woods on the other side. They then wait all night long, and during the night, they hear screams coming from the house. The next day they move on.

The father carries the boy to the edge of a forest and puts him down, the boy is asleep, and he will not wake for a long time. The father then sees a house and barn. The father decides to investigate, and he sets out. The father goes back and forth between the house, the house’s garage, and the barn finding things such as a box cutter and a grape flavor packet for water. He goes into the orchard, where he finds a shriveled, brown apple that he eats entirely. The father then goes up and down the rows of the orchard, finding more apples, which he then dumps in a pile in the barn. He goes back to the house, finds some mason jars, but remembers he saw a drainpipe, so he goes to investigate. He finds a concrete tank, which has a cistern, filled with the sweetest water he had ever tasted. He fills some mason jars with the water and returns to the boy. The boy wakes and finds that his father has done good. They take a break and go on to collect as many apples as they can.

The father and son, after traveling a distance, find a spot on an isthmus where they camp, and the father knows he will die. The father tells the son not to give him any shelter, and he does not want any food. The son is sad, and he begs the father not to leave him. The father says the boy will be fine, and that he will always be with him in his heart. That night, the father passes away.

The father and boy stumble across the father’s childhood home. The boy does not wish to enter, but the father insists, so they enter. Inside was a wrecked home, but one the father remembers. There was a fireplace, a hearth whose brick was still polished, and when they went upstairs, the father shows the boy his room. They both end up agreeing that they should not have entered the house and go on.

The father and boy finally reach the sea, after traveling for weeks on the road. The boy, all excited, goes into the water and plays. They spend the night on the beach, and the next day travel down the beach until they reach a double masted ship. The father decides to investigate, and so swims to the boat. Heexplores the boat, finding some food, a little water, lots of clothes, books in Spanish, some tools, and a burner from an oven. The father comes back to the beach where he left the boy, and they go celebrate what the father found. When leaving, the boy forgets the gun and they go back for it. Fortunately, it is still there. The next day, the father offloads more stuff from the boat, and does one final search, where he finds a flare gun, along with flares.

The boy stays 3 days with the father. He goes out into the road, and sees a man coming. Once the man reaches the boy, they talk, and the boy asks to join the man. Before they leave, they go back and see the father. The man takes all the blankets except for one and they go back to the road. The boy returns to his father, mourns him, and goes with the man. The son eventually meets a woman, who sometimes discusses God with him, but the boy, when he tries to speak to God, only speaks to his father. The boy speaks to his father and never forgets him. The end.

The father and boy leave the cart to go explore, and when they return to the cart, it is gone, and their camp around the cart is in shambles all over the beach. They proceed to follow the tracks to the road, where they split up going in either direction. The boy finds some sand in his direction, so they go that way for a long time. It is near dusk when they reach the thief, who had piled everything in the cart, and when he sees the father with the boy, he grabs a knife. The father pulls the pistol out, and the thief quickly starts listening to the father. The father makes him put his knife, and all his clothes in the cart. The boy starts to cry while the father is enraged. After the thief gives them his clothes, they leave with the cart.

The father and boy come across a house on the edge of a town. They search the house and there is not much. They go into the backyard, where the father feels something off, so he digs, until he finds plywood with a lock, which he breaks. Once he breaks the lock, he goes down into a cement bunker, where they find hundreds of cans of food, lots of water, plastic utensils, plates, beds, a lamp, and ammunition, but not for the pistol. The father and boy spend a few days there, eating, sleeping, getting haircuts, bathing in the house, and enjoying the warmth of the bunker. They play games, such as checkers, and prepare to leave. Once the father thinks they have stayed long enough, they pack and leave, taking with them plenty of food and water.

The story begins with the father waking from a dream. When he awakes, he pushes the tarp off of him and he remembers the dream he had. In the dream, the boy guided the father into a cave and when they reached a lake, they saw a creature. As the memory recedes and there was enough light, the father uses binoculars to look around the surronding area, seeing nothing. He returns to the camp, and sets up breakfast. The son then wakes up, they have breakfast, and they move on.

The father and boy reach a small coastal town. They explore it, not finding much, but when they reach the very end of town, they are attacked by someone with a bow and arrow. The father is shot in the leg, while the boy is fine. After the father is shot, the father shoots the flare gun at the man who shot him. The father checks the house the man came from to make sure he's dead. They go and set up camp in a store, setting up in the back room where the father stitches his wound back together. They spend two days in the store, where they talk about dreams, and the father works on his wound.

The boy spots a mansion on the road, so they go to investigate. Initially, the boy does not want to go in, but the father insists. As they enter, they find the house decaying, and they explore the house. They find a butler's closet that is filled with jars of food and decide to build a fire in the fireplace. The next day, the father goes upstairs and finds new blankets and clothes. The following day, the father finds a wheelbarrow, which he reinflates with a bicycle pump. They spend 4 days there, and move back on the road with the jars of food in the wheelbarrow.

The father is awakened by the noise of a convoy, and he along with the boy run into the woods. After running for a little while, they stop in a ditch and look back. They see one of the men twenty feet away from them, and the father points his gun at him. The father and man talk about what the man is doing, where the convoy is going, what the convoy has for food, and how the truck in the convoy is running. After they talk, the man makes a move for the boy. Before he gets to the boy, the father uses one of the two bullets in the pistol to kill the man. The father and boy run away but return the next day to find the cart they had left pillaged, and the convoy gone.
