ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

In recent decades, the growth of industrial activity and technological progress have caused alterations in the environment worldwide. These negative effects are known as global environmental problems.

Environmental issues

It is a natural process caused by gasses in the atmosphere that absorb the sun's energy and prevent it from escaping into outer space. In this way, our planet maintains a temperature suitable for the existence of life. At present, however, human activities have generated an excessive production of greenhouse gases, which has given rise to phenomena such as global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps.

The greenhouse effect

The main consequence of the increase in the greenhouse effect is global warming, because it raises the temperature around the world. This phenomenon is caused by the excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a gas produced by industries, automobiles, etc. Global warming is responsible for weather phenomena such as rainfall, hurricanes and droughts. It also causes the advance of deserts.

Global warming

The polar regions are located in the areas near the poles. Around the North Pole are located a part of Greenland and several frozen seas. The South Pole is occupied by Antarctica. In both areas, the ice caps are currently melting. As a result, sea levels are rising and endangering the lives of some coastal populations.
