Questions with Be, Do, and Can
Am - Are - Is - Was - Were Do, Does, Did Can
Be & Can
We make questions with the verb to be and can by inverting the verb and the subject: She is a teacher Is she a teacher? He can drive Can he drive? You are hungry Are you hungry? I can sit there Can I sit there?
To be ???
To be is often used with nouns, adjectives and prepositional phrases. It is also used in continuous tenses (present and past continuous). In its interrogative form, it asks for the characteristics of the subject and is placed before it (the sentence ends with a question mark).
Am / Are / Is Was / Were
The forms are: Am I…?, Are you…?, Is he…?, Was she…?, Is it…?, Are we…?, Are you…? and Are they…?. Was I...?, Were you...?, Was he/she/it...?, Were we/you/they...?

How to create questions with "can"
- Identify the subject: Determine the person or thing performing the action or being discussed in the question.
- Add “can” before the subject: Insert the modal verb “can” before the subject to indicate the possibility or ability of the subject to do something.
- Add the base form of the verb after “can”: Use the base form of the main verb to complete the question.
- Add more information: Add complementary information to the action.
- Add a question mark: End the sentence with a question mark to indicate it’s a question.
Questions with do / does / did in simple present and simple past
Use this word order: auxiliary + subject + base form Did you go out last night? Does Mary work with Tom? You can also use a question word (where, when, what, how, who): Where did you go?
🧠 Tips for Use: - Use "to be" when asking about states or ongoing actions. - Use "do/does/did" for general actions in present or past. - Use "can/could" for abilities or permissions—it's a modal, so it stays the same for all subjects.
