Opener: Constructing Arguments

Arguments have four main parts: the claim, the reasons, the support, and the warrant.

4. The Warrant

The warrant is like the missing link between the evidence and the main point being argued. It's the assumption that makes the evidence actually back up the reasons. Without the warrant, the evidence on its own doesn't necessarily prove anything. The warrant fills in the blank of "why does this evidence count?"

2. The Reason(s)

The reasons give explanations for the claim. Reasons answer the question "Why?" If the claim is challenged, reasons provide justification, like "It teaches students to think independently."

This is what supports my claim.

3. The Evidence

The support backs up the reasons with evidence. Evidence can be things like facts, statistics, examples, or opinions from experts.Support helps prove the reasons are valid.
