Duke William of Normandy, crowned king of England in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day. He killed Harold (chosen by the Witan to be king of England) in battle near Hastings.

Cnut (994-1035), the leader of the Danish Vikings, became king for the simple reason that the Witan feared disorder.
