Who created?
Volleyball was created in 1895 by the American William G. Morgan, then physical education director of the Young Men's Christian Association (ACM) in the city of Holyoke, Massachusetts, in the United States. The first name of this sport that would become one of the biggest in the world was mintonette.
What is volleyball?
Also called volley or volleyball, it is a sport of North American origin in the 19th century. It is a sport of significant popularity in a large part of the world, and is present in many tournaments and sporting events of international scope, such as the Olympic Games and the Pan American Games.
Origin of volleyball in the Olympics
Volleyball was first played at the Olympic Games in 1924 as part of a special event featuring American sports. It was only after the Second World War that consideration began to be given to adding it to the Olympics programme, under pressure from the newly formed International Federation (1947) and some of the continental confederations. To garner support for this proposal, an exhibition tournament was organized in 1957 during the 53rd session of the International Olympic Committee in Sofia, Bulgaria. The competition was a success, and the sport was officially introduced in 1964.
How to play
Each team consists of 6 players on court and 6 reserve players. After serving, each team will only be able to touch the ball three times, and it is forbidden for a player to touch the ball twice in a row. The winning team is the one that wins the most sets.
Volleyball rules
01
Court: The volleyball court is 18 meters long and 9 meters wide. It is divided in half by a net that is 2.43 meters high for men and 2.24 meters high for women.
02
Teams: Each team is made up of 6 players, but reserves are also allowed. Player positions on the court are defined and numbered from 1 to 6, with the setter being number 1.
03
Serve: Each set begins with the serve, where a player must hit the ball with his hand above his head and send it over the net to the opponent's court. The serve can be done in different ways, such as the serve over, under or in jump.
04
Hits: During the game, each team is entitled to three hits to return the ball to the opposite side of the court. The touches can be made with any part of the body, but each player cannot make two consecutive touches.
05
Attacks: The attack is made when a player jumps and hits the ball to the opposite side of the opposing court, with the aim of making it touch the ground. However, the attack can only be made from the attack zone, which is delimited by a line that is 3 meters away from the net.
06
Blocking: Blocking is a defensive technique in which a player jumps close to the net with arms outstretched to try to stop an opposing attack. Blocking is not considered a hit, and even if the blocker touches the ball, his teammates are still entitled to three hits.
07
Scoring: Games are played in sets, and to win a set, a team needs to score 25 points (with a lead of at least 2 points) first. In case of a tie, the game continues until one of the teams reaches the necessary difference to win.
