Reflections on my teaching practices

WHAT MAKES A TEACHER A GOOD RESEARCHER OF THEIR OWN TEACHING PRACTICES?

“Every class can be researched as a teacher and in every class there are things that can be learned.”

(Canagarajah, 2021)

In 21st century teaching contexts, teachers are seen as active participants in the learning process, who collaborate with learners to co-create knowledge. However, if we want to expand our horizons and become researchers of our own teaching practices, we also need to use our fine tuned skill of observation to tailor our lessons according to the demands of the class.

“Post-method pedagogy is not an alternative method but an alternative to method”

(Kumaravadivelu, 2013)

We need to develop a "transformative approach to teaching". Therefore, we need to shift from: - a linear discrete approach to a cyclical holistic one. - a "transmission model" (information oriented) to a "transformation model" (inquiry oriented) - the concept of "method" to the concept of "post-method"

"Our goal as teachers is then, to become strategic thinkers and strategic explorers of our own classrooms"

“It is not enough that teachers work should be studied: they need to study it themselves"

(Stenhouse, 1975)

When we took an active role as investigators, we not only resort to sources of authority, personal beliefs or past experiences. We develop a "craft knowledge" that can only be gained through observation and practical experiences in the classroom.

By developing a reflective attitude towards our teaching practices and adopting an active role as researcher, we feel empowered to take action in our own teaching contexts. This can be achieved through: - Collaboration with teachers, students and stakeholders. - Reflection and evaluation of teaching practices. - Experimentation of new strategies and interventions. - Flexibility to adapt and change teaching practices in response to evidence.
