Adverbs of manner
Let's learn slowly but accurately!
Adverbs of Manner
They describe action verbs. They say how or in what manner something happens. The adverb often comes at the end of the sentence. Eg. * She spoke slowly. * He walked fast.
Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ly to an adjective. * bad - badly * clear - clearly * serious - seriously
Be Careful!
Some words that end in -ly are adjectives, not adverbs. These adjectives have no adverb form. Eg. * Lively * Lovely * Ugly * Lonely * Friendly
Some adverbs of manner have the same form as adjectives.
* She's a hard worker. She works hard every day.
Liking verbs are followed by adjectives, not adverbs.
Eg. * These eggs taste good. Not: These eggs taste well. X * She seems sad. * It sounds beautiful.
Special Note:
Well is also an adjective that means "in good health."
Well is the adverb for the adjective good. * She's a good speaker. * She speaks well.
* I feel well.
