The concept of identity is a complex one, shaped by individual characteristics, family dynamics, historical factors, and social and political contexts. Who am I? The answer depends in large part on who the world around me says I am. Who do my parents say I am? Who do my peers say I am? What message is reflected back to me in the faces and voices of my teachers, my neighbors, store clerks? What do I learn from the media about myself? How am I represented in the cultural images around me? Or am I missing from the picture altogether?

- Psychologist and educator Beverly Daniel Tatum

Identity: The fact of being who or what a person or thing is. - Oxford dictionary Encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships, and values that create one’s sense of self. - Psychology Today

Personal identity:

The unique ways that you define yourself. One person might choose to emphasize family, religion, interests when describing their identity. A different person might emphasize their race, neighborhood, and job as important parts of who they are.

Your personal identity consists of all the things that you believe make you, you.

Social Identity

Social identity

- Your sense of who you are based on your membership in certain groups: Ability, age, economic class, ethnicity, gender, nationality, language, race, religion, and sexual orientation. - We are all born into social groups, but they can change as we change - Sometimes we have a choice about which social groups we are associated with, and sometimes we get placed in groups we don’t identify with.

we still have agency over how we define ourselves and what aspects of our identities we want to emphasize over others

Sympathy carries greater emotional distance. With empathy, you can imagine or understand how someone might feel, without necessarily having those feelings yourself.

Empathy vs sympathy

Empathy is used when one person shares the feelings of another; an example is when one experiences sadness when someone close is experiencing grief or loss.

Why is diversity important?

1) Diversity drives creativity and innovation2) Higher rates of Productivity and Performance 3) Personal Growth
