What Would You Do?
What would you do?
Path Two
You are working for a large healthcare organization that is going through a cultural integration of two healthcare systems following a corporate merger. At a staff meeting this week, your manager shared with your team a decision from the corporate office that will significantly impact workflows in your department. You vehemently disagree with the decision because you believe that the organization has made a decision that is unethical. How do you handle the situation?

There are still several options you can take to ensure an integrity-based response to the issue, while concurrently helping to build a good, strong department culture. Please select another path.
- Refrain from calling out the decision during the meeting. Do some research into the issue from a systems perspective:
- What is happening in the regulatory environment that precipitated this change?
- What else might be happening that precipitated this change (i.e. supply chain interruptions, reimbursement changes, quality or safety issues, etc.)?
- Think about the specific ways this decision impacts your department workflows. Offer a strategy or solution for how that impact might be mitigated
Try Again
Do a gut check before speaking. Are you reacting to the decision because of the impact it has on you and your team or because it is truly unethical? What makes it unethical? How do you know? Consider your emotions and reflect on why you are reacting so strongly. Chances are the issue is not unethical…it’s simply inconvenient for you.

It is appropriate for you to talk with your team about the decision. However, potentiating negativity and resistance does little to help your team adjust to the change, nor will it contribute to a high-performing culture or ethical climate in the department. In fact, contributing to gossip, negativity and resistance is one of the most toxic behaviors a team member can demonstrate. Rather than simply communicating your disagreement, invite your colleagues into a conversation about how you can best support the organization in implementing the decision. To do so, you must assume positive intent on the part of your leadership team. This action reflects the difference between one who demonstrates leadership and one who is simply a follower.
- Invite team members to do their own gut checks and identify what each individual is reacting to. Chances are you are all worried about the same things.
- It is not about getting consensus on why the decision is unethical. Rather, the gut check helps to ensure that you are responding to the core issue with intellect and curiosity and not responding to the initial emotion.
- Ask you team some questions:
- When we implement this decision, what are we most worried will happen?
- How do we prevent those things from happening? In other words, how do we mitigate the potential of that happening?

Your human resources business partner is always a good option when you have already taken appropriate steps to address your concerns with your manager, and you have done so in a way that maintains your own integrity and that of organizational leaders. Keep in mind that just because you believe the organization is doing something unethical does not make that a fact. It is always a good idea to follow the chain of command before escalating an issue to the next level.

It is appropriate to talk with your manager about your concerns. Two ideas are important here: 1) just because you believe the decision is unethical does not make it so, and 2) be sure to identify what you see as a solution. Rather than simply assuming that system-level leaders are intentionally doing something unethical, it may be helpful to assume positive intent. Assuming their intent is pure, you can then proceed towards solutions (i.e. mitigating the impact of the decision on your workflows, etc.)
