WHAT IS AN OPERATING SYSTEM?

  • Operating System lies in the category of system software.
  • An operating sysytem is an itermediary between software and hardware.
  • An Operating System performs all the basic tasks like managing files, processes, and memory.
  • An Operating System (OS) is a collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs.

TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM

BATCH O.S.

TIME SHARING O.S.

REAL TIME O.S.

NETWORK O.S.

DISTRIBUTED O.S.

01

BATCH OPERATING SYSTEM

BATCH OPERATING SYSTEM

  • BOS is a computer system that allows multiple users to use it, without direct communication between them.
  • keep all users in separate ‘batches’, meaning they can’t interact with each other directly.
  • To speed up the process ,a job with similar types of needs are batched together.
BENEFITS:
  • Less time consumption
  • easy to manage bigger tasks.

02

time sharing operating system

time sharing operating system

  • Allows the user to perform more than one task at a time, each task getting the same amount of time to execute.
  • It is the division of CPU time for each process when more than one task are given by the user.
  • This time duration is known as time slot, time slice, or quantum.
  • task works more smoothly because of equal time sharing to each process.
  • Also known as multitasking system.

03

real time operating system

real time operating system

  • The real-time operating systems are used in real-time systems where the time constraints are fixed and followed strictly.
  • This means that the time for processing and responding is very small. Moreover, the system should perform the given task in a fixed time otherwise, it results in a system failure.
  • Response Time is the time within which the system takes the input, processes the data, and gives the results
  • Moreover, they are used in systems like robots, missile launches, airplanes, etc.

04

network operating system

network operating system

  • (NOS) is software that connects multiple devices and computers on the network.
  • A network operating system is an operating system that connects multiple computers and devices on a local area network to allow sharing of files and resources by connection and communication over a network.
  • allows them to share resources on the network.
  • Allows to access files, web services, backup of data etc.

05

distributed operating system

DISTRIBUTED OPERATING SYSTEM

  • A distributed operating system is one in which several computer systems connected through a single communication channel.
  • Interconnected computers communicate with each other through shared communication network.
  • These systems have their individual processors and memory.
  • We can also call them loosely coupled systems.
  • It helps by decreasing the load on the system.
