Chapter #7

Context: Training begins

• 3 nights where all the tributes train together
• Last afternoon, each tribute will get a chance to perform in front of the Gamemakers

• They talk about their skills, Katniss’s ability with a bow and arrow and Peeta’s strength
• Peeta and Katniss begin to train always together, first tying knots, then learning to camouflage, etc
• They both notice a little girl, called Rue, from district 11 watching them train.
• When it’s Katniss turn in front of the Gamemakers, she grabs a bow an arrow and shoots a dummy. She misses the first try but continues to do several perfect shots.
• However, they are not paying attention, so she shoots an arrow straight to the apple in the pigs mouth at the Gamemakers’ table, bows and says “Thank you for your consideration”

• Cinna, Portia, Effie and Haymitch join Peeta and Katniss for dinner
• During dinner, Katniss recognizes a young woman and everyone snaps at her. The young woman was a Avox, or someone that committed a crime. The punishment is to cut out her tongue. No one is supposed to talk to one unless it’s an order.
• After dinner Peeta and Katniss go up to the roof and find a garden with flowers.
• Katniss tells Peeta that she knows how she remembered the girl. She was escaping from the Peacekeepers when Katniss saw her while hunting.
