USE

USE

You use WAS OR WERE when you’re talking about reality and known facts. If you went to the store, for example, then you would say, “I was at the store” because it is something that definitely happened. The same is true if you’re talking about someone else in the third person (or if you make the choice to talk about yourself in the third person). You would say, “Sarah was at the store,” for example, or “She was at the store.”

WAS/WERE WAS/WERE BORN

WAS/WERE

We use was/were as the past simple forms of be. We use was for I/he/she/it and were for you/we/they.

WAS/WERE BORN

We use was/were in the expression was/were born. The expression be born is always past (NOT present): was/were born.

was/were negative form

The negative short forms of was not and were not are wasn’t and weren’t, but there are no short forms of was and were in affirmative sentences.Tom was tired, but Susan wasn’t very tiredPaul and Tom were happy, but we weren’t happy.

was/were question form

To make a question, just like the present simple, we change the position of 'was / were' and the subject.was I sleepy?were you late?was he at the cinema?
