The only option for very large luggage, and the recommended option for all luggage that is not needed sooner. Only available on some days.”

Your cargo will be located at the BCI dock, where you will be able to pick it up and take it to your room. Please coordinate cargo boat delivery time with corromc@si.edu

HOUSING

Carpenter House and Smith House

Ideal for families and/or long stays Located in the hill next to the Visitors Center, both houses have 2 bedrooms with A/C, one with a full bed and the other with two twin beds, a shared bathroom, kitchenette, living room, washer and dryer, wi-fi,and a small terrace.

SN Building is on our southern part of the island, immerse in our tropical forest is closer to the Visitor´s Center and trolley.The rooms have 2 or 3 twin beds, a shared bathroom and wi-fi. Building A is a shared space with 4 bunkbeds and a shared bathroom, ideal for small groups.

Located on the Northern side of the island, this buildings are closer to the BCI Admin Office and Labs. The rooms have two full beds, a shared bathroom, a desk, wi-fi and balcony.

Carrying luggage on the Jacana or Morpho

1. Have all luggage in one of two forms:

• In one or more backpacks that you (the visitor) are capable of safely carrying onto and off the boat yourself while keeping your hands free, in order to be able to safely climb up and down ladders and step from the dock to the boat, etc.
• In units that can be easily and safely handed onto the boat (for example, something that you could put in and out of an overhead luggage bin on an aircraft without difficulty). NOTE: when the lake level is low, luggage needs to be handed up or down a considerable distance.

2. Please advise the BCI administration of the total volume of luggage, the number of trips on and off the boat that will be required for you to transport the items in backpacks, and the number of items that would be handed down, so that enough luggage space is reserved on the boat and enough time is allotted for boarding. Advice: If your suitcases are heavy please consider basically to unpack and repack your luggage when you are inside the boat to make things work.

What in included in your room and board?

• The accommodation service at BCI includes bed linen, pillows, body soap, and towel. • Staying at STRI dormitories comes with different expectations than staying in a hotel. While hotel guests expect full housekeeping service in their rooms, STRI room visitors must be responsible for keeping rooms clean during their stay. The cleaning staff will ensure the general cleaning of your room upon arrival and departure, and once a week, they will quickly clean the bathrooms in your room. • At BCI, we have a laundry room service available for you. You only need to bring your biodegradable laundry soap. • Your night rate includes three meals (dinner on the day of arrival, breakfast, and lunch on the following day). Breakfast and lunch on the day of arrival date are not included. If required, please contact BCI Administrative Assistant before 9:00 a.m. on your arrival date.

Carrying luggage on the water taxi

• An option for backpacks that you can safely move on and off the boat yourself, subject to space availability.
• Please advise the BCI administration of the total volume of luggage and the number of trips on and off the boat that will be required for you to transport the materials (i.e., how many backpacks), so that enough luggage space is reserved on the boat and enough time is allotted for boarding. (Please provide pictures and dimensions of luggage and special remarks, for water taxis you need at least one side to be 15” or 38cm in order to pass the Water Taxis entrance)

When, where and how?

• Room Check-in at BCI is at 2 p.m. You can find the keys and meal cards in the mailbox corresponding to the first letter of your last name. Room Check-out is at 12:00 p.m. When you leave the room, plesae return your keys and meal card in the quick check out box, located just beside the Administration Office Door. Avoid fees for unreturned keys or meal cards. • You will find the room number assigned to you in the quote that will be sent a few days before your arrival. Remember that most of the rooms are shared. However, we will do our best to assign rooms according to your stay length, compatibility, and availability.

How to get your STRI ID?

The ID station works from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 12 noon, however, to expedite the process, it is best to coordinate with them before arriving. Please get in touch with Julia Areas at areasj@si.edu or Luis Carlos Lopez at lopezl@si.edu .
