"a" & "AN"

INTRODUCTION

In English, we use articles to refer to specific or general nouns. The two most common articles are "a" and "an". Today we will learn how to use these articles correctly and practice with some examples.

INDEFINITE ARTICLES

"A"

"AN"

We use "a" before words that start with a consonant sound.

We use "an" before words that start with a vowel sound.

For example:

• a book
• a car
• a dog

For example:

• an apple
• an egg
• an umbrella

Be careful

If you add a word (or words) before the noun, follow the rules of "A" and "AN". For example:

• He's an excellent teacher.
• She's an honest woman.
• There's a really beautiful eagle at the zoo.
