Comparative adjectives

are used to compare differences between two objects, places or people

the comparative form depends on the size of the adjective.

For one syllable adjectives, only add -er

short- shortertall-taller old - older

If an adjective ends in -e, add -r

safe -safernice - nicer.

If an adjective ends in a vowel and a consonant, we usually double the consonant.

hot - hotterthin - thinner

If a two syllable adjective ends in a consonant and -y, we change the -y to -i and add -er.

adjectives with two or more syllables

happy - happiernoisy- noisier

We use more for longer adjectives

beautiful - more beautifulintelligent - more intelligent

EXCEPTIONS

You can either add -er / -r or more with two syllable adjectives, such as common, cruel, gentle, narrow, happy..

Exceptions and irregular adjectives.

Some adjectives are irregular:good - better bad - worse
