This is a clause that generally modifies a noun or a noun phrase and is often introduced by a relative pronoun. There are two types of relative clauses:

Possesives

Demostratives

Intensifiers and Mitigators

Determiners

Intensifiers and mitigators are used to vary the degree of strenght of and adjective, verb or adverb.

Introduces nouns and is used before a singular noun. There are 4 types:

+Intensifiers

Mitigators

While inensifiers strengthen the meaning of an adjectve, mitigators make them less strong. With comparative adjectives we use the following words and phrases as mitigators.

  • The movie was fairly boring.
  • The students were rather quiet in class.
  • It’s a pretty nice day.
  • The movie was fairly boring.

Non restrictive clauses

A nonrestrictive clause adds additional information to a sentence. It uses commas to show that the information is additional. If the information between the commas is omitted, readers will still understand the overall meaning of the sentence. e is also known as A nonessential clause or phrase

  • I want to thank my father, Mark Smith, for all of his love and support.
  • The hypothesis, which I tested throughout the research, was rejected.

Restrictive Clauses

Restricts or defines the meaning of a noun or noun phrase and provides necessary information about the noun in the sentence. It is not separated from the rest of the sentence by commas and are more common in writing. When the relative pronoun functions as the object of the sentence, it can and usually is omitted from the relative clause.

  • The results that I obtained may invoke positive social change.
  • • The article that I requested did not arrive on time.
  • • The participants who I interviewed met me at the local library

Intensifiers

Intensifiers add strenght or force to the meaning of an adjective. When we want to indicate that something or someone is exceptional, we can use strong adjectives. As an intensifier with strong adjectives, we generally use: With comparative adjectives we use particular words or phrases as intensifiers. With superlative adjectives we use: ⬩ Easily, by far

  • Some intensifiers may only be used with particular adjectives.
  • Dangerously ill
  • Seriously injured
  • Highly successful
  • Highly intelligent
  • Etc.
