Sentences and sentences Fragments

By: Miss GARCIA

What is a sentence?

It is a collection of words that expresses a complete idea or opinion. Always begin with a capital letters and end with a punctuation mark. A complete sentence must contain at least three important elements: a subject, a verb, and an object.

SENTENCE

Usually the subject is either a noun or a pronoun. And, if there is a subject, the sentence must also contain a verb, because all verbs require a subject. Here you can use different parts of speech or at least some.

EXAMPLES OF SENTENCES

  • The boy is going on a bike ride.
  • Maria walked around the block with her dog.
  • The boys play with the ball.
  • The bus was late to school
  • The leaves blow in the wind.

What is a sentence Fragment?

A Sentence Fragment is a sentence that is missing either its subject or its main verb. A Sentence Fragment is composed of dependent clause or phrase, but lack independent clause. Sentence Fragment can be easily mistaken with complete sentence, since it starts with capital letters and end with a full stop. It is easy to spot a fragment in a sentence, since it never expresses a complete idea.
