We all have a role to play in regards to creating inclusive classroom. The benefit of inclusive classrooms is higher levels of success for all students, especially those who have been historically underserved (Kumar, R. et. al., 2019). In a world that is increasingly diverse, offering our students the tools to empathize, connect, and achieve is critical.

Restorative Practices
Encouraging all students to take ownership of their learning
Restorative practices are comprehensive strategies that encourage students to reconnect to themselves and community (Mirsky, L., 2011). When disruptions to the learning environment or disagreements occur, school staff offers strategies to resolve the challenge. While zero tolerance policies are often seen as positive in order to prevent issues, studies show that infractions decrease by half when implemented properly (Mirsky, L., 2011). When we as a community choose connection over punishment, we ensure that as many students as possible are present for high quality learning.

A Winning Approach
Zaretta Hammond's Ready for Rigor framework encourages teachers to take a holistic approach to teaching. Expert teachers learn how to engage students in higher level thinking, speaking, and writing by building safe spaces and connecting with students (Hammond, Z., 2019) Students who are active participants in their own learning and who feel safe in their classroom environment are much more likely to excel in a given subject matter. Our school encourages and supports teachers as they work toward becoming warm demanders, teacher who can both challenge and support students.
