Writing Accuracy

Be careful at sentence structure and word choice so you can describe your topics effectively. During this course we will be studying the elements of style to apply those elements to your drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading.

Coherence

In Section 8 you have to write an item of correspondence, which could be an email an informal letter, or a formal letter (120-150 words), you should use language flexibly and effectively to persuade, convince, amuse, impress, or otherwise move the reader.

Can you write letters and other personal correspondence in which you express yourself clearly and precisely while using language flexibly and effectively? Organization

Start by looking carefully at the questions and identifying the genre and the recipient. Is your text going to be formal or informal, or colloquial? Next, highlight the purpose of your correspondence. Identify all the key points. Make some notes for each point. You may need to use some information from the text in Section 7, so refer back to that and identify anything that could be useful.

Avoid copying too much language from the reading, use your own words.

Plan how you're going to organize your text. Are you going to follow the order in which the content points are given? How much do you intend to write about each point? Make sure you have some time to edit your text. Check that you've completed the three tasks in the bullet points.

Read the Section 8 task instructions on page 41. What sort of correspondence are you going to write? Who are you writing to? Will it be formal or informal? Why? What should the reader do after reading your correspondence?

Underline the keywords in the question. What is the specific topic you are being asked to write about? In Section 8, you are given several points that you must cover in your answer. Write some notes on the three points listed on page 41 Include ideas from the text in Section 7 on page 36 as well as your own ideas.

Look at these phrases from the text in Section 7. You would like to use these ideas in your text. How could you paraphrase them to use your own words? a) Numerous studies have also identified a correlation between sleep deprivation and poor academic performance, concentration span, and memory problems. b) Sleep is the cornerstone of health and happiness for young children and not an optional extra. c) Children aged six to 12 years old should sleep 10-11 hours a night, while teenagers need to get nine hours of sleep a night. d) Schools that have experimented with later start times are reporting greater concentration levels in class because pupils are arriving more refreshed and ready to study.

Resources of interest

Carefuly read the information about the two topics you have to choose from. Focus on both the topic and the type of text you are asked to write. Consider which topic appeal to you more, which topic you have more ideas about, or think that you have the wide range of language required.

An essay needs to have an introductory paragraph that sets out the issues, a main body in which several arguments are developed in an interconnected way, and must end with a conclusion.

Essay

Requires an appealing introduction to the topic in the opening sentences. It then needs to explore several related ideas, using personal examples and anecdotes to maintain the readers interest. It should have a short conclusion linking back to the beginning of the text.

Article

Needs to clearly sate the writer´s opinion about the topic or item under review. It should begin with a brief description of the item under review and then expand on the main position of the writer. whether positive or negative. It may also include anguments from the other point of view, before a final paragraph gives your overall opinion and recommendation.

Review

You must write between 200 and 250 words, if you write significantly below 200 words or above 250 words, you are unlikely to fulfill the task requirements effectively.

1.- It's essential that you plan your answer before you start writing. Read Section 9 questions a and b and highlight the key points in each one. a) You see the following opinion presented in an online discussion forum for teenagers. Write an essay on the following topic, giving your views with reference to your own experiences: “Modern celebrities have a responsibility to serve as role models to young people:" b) You see this in a school magazine.

Reviews wanted! Some books and films have long-lasting appeal because they can be enjoyed no matter how many times you read or watch them. We want to find out which books or films stand the test of time? Tell us about 'one which you have enjoyed multiple times, and why! The best reviews will be published in our next edition.
